Why Not Just A Rebuild?

Recommended Posts

I mean since UFO was so great, why not just rebuild it? Nothing against xenocide here but it's not going to happen overnight.

I'm not sure if we'd want to do it as the old 2D or port it all to 3D but essentialy exactly the same game and make it UFO DEFENSE 2

-We can't do that because it's copyrighted-

True - Atari announced they would merge with infogrames on April 8th 2008 and when they do Infogrames will be the sole owner of Microproses intellectual property. However Infogrames has only lost money on x-com since it acquired it, and xenocide would release it for free. X-COM UFO has already been released as abandon ware and free ware and is now free. This doesn't leave Infogrames any room to sue anyone, besides, even if they could win in court what good would it do.

-But we already have UFO DEFENSE-

Well ya, but we don't have the source code, we can't mod it, we can't make it multiplayer, the graphics suck and we can't replace it with higher res graphics... you get the picture right?

-But if we're gonna do that why not just make the whole thing?- Making a rebuild should be real quick, the hardest part would be the code. All the rest of it would be 'draw a higher res Firestorm' and 'draw a higher res Heavy Plasma' ect

I guess I'll edit as I get other arguments.

Atari doesn't own X-Com, Take2 does.

X-Com is not freeware nor abandonware, and it's still illegal to get it at "abandonware" sites or wherever.

If people could have worked on the on games, they would have already done it during the past 15 years, right? ;)

Xcomufo has a lot of utilities/little mods that can change/improve/harden/whatever your experience with the old game. (legal)

If you want a complete rebuild of the original, learn Assembly and spend countless years working on the original :D (illegal btw)

If you want a new game, inspired by the original, try any of the existing projects (Xenocide, UFO: AI (Alien Invasion))

If you want a multiplayer game like ufo:eu, try ufo2k (UFO 2000)

If you want a new game, trying to be as close to the original as possible, try UFO: CF (Cydonias Fall)

If you want a commercial game inspired by the original, play UFO: ET (Extraterrestials)

For everything else, you are on your own I guess :P
