Where are my saved games saving?

Hello,

I was a fan of the X-Com games since they first came out in the mid nineties.

I recently bought a new laptap using Vista 64 bit and thought having the "classics" games on the laptop would be fun.

I purchased the games online from Direct2Drive... they run in dosbox and work great. I thought would personalize my game some and cheat a little using a game editor. That is when I discovered my saved game folders have no data in them.

Maybe, I am just crazy but shouldn't my saved game folders have more than 3bytes of info?

Any guidence or help would be appreciated.

There should be a litter of .dat files. That 3 byte file, dum.bin, is just a dummy file.

Are the save games still showing up when you play the game?

Just to note that I have the D2D versions and my games get saved to a folder like normal. I'm using XP though. ;)

It's probably an accessibility problem with Vista. Are the folders locked or protected?

Thanks for the replies.

I have 4 saved games from Terror from the Deep. None of saved game folders have any data but the DUM. All 4 games load correctly.

I checked the properties on the Game_XXX folders. I do not see where I have any objects protected or hiddened. All the game slots have a last modified date of 12/26/09 which is when I first loaded the game but I have saved numerous times since.

As an experiment, I loaded Terror from the Deep onto my girlfriend's labtop which has XP. I created a new game, saved that game and transferred the saved game back to my labtop. I placed that saved game into my 4th slot. When I pick the 4th slot... my old 4th saved game loads instead of the new one.

I am experiencing the same issue with UFO Defense and saved games.

This just might a Vista thing but I am lost on what else to look for.

You might want to have a look and see if the game has not been installed twice and you're looking at one that's in a different location.

Do a computer wide search for one of the data files in the game and check the file details to have a look at the path.

My games are found at the following path: "C:\Program Files\2K Games\X-Com UFO Defense\XCOM" which is the default. But yeah, I agree with NKF here - if you are running the game via a shortcut, do a right click and select properties to find out exactly where the game is installed. ;)

Ahhhhh success.....

I took NKF's advice and just searched in general for a file that would be found in the Game_XXXX (I searched for soldier).

The game itself is not installed twice but the saved games containing the files are kept in a folder under USER folder. The Game_XXX folders found where the game is actually installed appear to be shortcuts.

This is also true for my Xcom UFO game.

Zombie... My game installed by default to the same pathway as yours. But my actual saved games are located

at C:\Users\Ken\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\ProgramFiles(x86)\2KGames\X-comTerror from the Deep\TFD. There is nothing in the TFD folder but the 4saved games and the MISSDAT and Sound folders.

Wow.... thanks for help, I never would have found them on my own.

Interesting, My XP machine has a hidden directory named "Application Data" but there isn't a Local folder in there. Must just be a Vista thing. Thanks for sleuthing down the location - that is very helpful to know. :) =b

Vista and Windows 7 run all applications as a limited user, XP run as an administrator for most home users. "c:\Program Files (x86)" and "c:\Program Files" are setup to NOT allow limited users to change the files, while administrators can. The difference being the If your a kid and your parents are smart they set you up as a "Limited User". On XP you get a "Access Denied", on Vista and 7 your saves are saved to the \AppData\Local\VirtualStore allowing you to run the game with no hitches. This is why many game designed for XP save the games in MyDocs\MyGames folder.

Steam takes a different route and resets permissions to allow limited users to write to the game folder.

If you want the game to not use the VirtualStore. either add change rights to the Users group on the game folder, OR right click and select "Run As Administrator"
