well there is a forum on each game y'know!

UFO EU

TFTD

Apocalyse

Interceptor

All are on PC, with the first two also on PS1 I believe.

First two you can get in DOS versions or 'gold' version which was updated for windows. You can choose either, but the dos version is regarded as the best version, although you may have severe problems with it.

Dipstick,

Why is the DOS version considered superior to the Gold windows version?

Thanks,

It isn't. But neither is the CE superior (The 'Gold' editions were released in the X-Com Collectors Edition - not to be confused with any earlier dos releases with 'Gold' or 'Platinum' editions)

Earlier dos versions had more appealing sound effects (which sounds scratchy on newer soundcards). The instruments in the midi synthesiser music in the Dos version sounds a lot different from the way Windows plays midi files. This can vary a lot depending on your soundcard - and often the dos version will sound much more appealing. But again, this varies by soundcard.

The UFO CE also introduces one or two additional bugs (mainly the blaster bomb vertical waypoint bug), but otherwise crashes as often as the dos version. Only the crashes seem more severe as you crash right back to the desktop. When crashes happen in the dos version, we get to see a memory dump in big text and then the game resumes from a previous game (usually the last mission). But that's just because the batch file that acts as the main game loop hasn't crashed, so it's continuing as if everything's all right. The same thing happens in the CE when you use XComutil to split the game into two executables again.

Oh, and one glaring difference. The CE doesn't have sound effects for the intro and the movie does not match up with the music.

So which is better? Neither. The best one is the game that you can actually get running and enjoy.

Other X-Com Titles

X-Com: Enforcer - a typical arcade shoot-em-up that is amusing, but is only X-Com in name. Quite a waste of the capabilities of the Unreal tournament game engine, but there you go.

X-Com: Interceptor - X-Com - in space. Kind of like the originals, but replaces missions with typical space flight combat simulator.

E-Mail X-Com: A very simplistic play-by-e-mail game. Nothing terribly exciting, but an amusing waste of time nonetheless. Imagine playing chess or draughts by e-mail, and there you have it.

Then there would've been Genesis and Alliance, but these were canned.

I couldn't say how you could get most of these titles. You could look in bargain bins - not many people even want to touch the Enforcer boxes when my local store had a supply of them. I think I was the only person to buy a copy before they replaced everything with a whole shelf of generic EA Sports sporting games (which are still there today).

Or you could try finding some way or ordering or bartering for a copy on-line.

E-mail X-Com has small community of its own, so you could try asking around in one of the e-mail X-Com forums (this forum has one).
