Sound Problem With The (music I Guess) In Xcom Gold

Handel

Recommended Posts

I started XCom 1 (gold edition) under Win XP and the sound seems to work OK, but besides the normal sounds IN THE BATTLES ONLY I hear a very annoyng non-stop "bou-bou-bou... "- like some loud machine is working non-stop. And I hear no music at all. I installed the "old sounds" patch and tryied to run it under Win 95 compability but nothing changes.

I browsed the forum too but didn't find anything limilar posted.

Any ideas?

Edit: Damn! I checked the midi files itself and the tactics.midi (or something like this) sounds just like this. So it is some weird midi file I have!

That dull thumping is the battlescape music. You can mimic it by getting a rubber band, cutting it and then stretching it end on end. Hold it close to your ear and start flicking it. Tighten or loosen it to change the pitch of the noise. Yes, the odd things you notice when you're bored. ;)

Hmm, actually the rubber band sounds much more exciting ...

Midi music will sound different with different sound cards - they all come with their own midi instrument table. That's one thing I always hated about midi fles. My old 8-bit mono sound blaster compatible played the dos battlescape music beautifully - especially if you wore headphones. But when I later got a stereo 16-bit soundblaster, it became unbearable. A different computer with a similar type of card made it sound different yet again. It's really variable.

The windows version's battlescape music has always been terrible no matter what soundcard I've played it on.

I recommend copying GMGEO2.mid and replacing tactical.mid with it. Trust me, it makes tactical combat much more enjoyable.
