[battleship]

Short Entry:

This juggernaut of alien technology is quite possibly the deadliest threat X-Corps pilots will ever face. In addition to being nearly unstoppable in the air, it carries a large, often high ranking, crew and has displayed a readiness to engage our most heavily armed forces.

Alien battleships should be engaged as far from bases or civilian population centers as possible by multiple interceptors. The use of advanced technology is highly recommended, as conventional craft stand little chance against these large ships.

Body:

The alien battleship is by far the largest craft we've seen; all other alien ships pale in comparison. From the interrogation of prisoners and analysis of captured design documents, it is clear that we are dealing with a vessel which outclasses in every respect anything we can currently produce. Apart from being extremely well armed and armored, alien battleships are also one of the fastest alien vessels in existence. We believe that only a perfect replication of alien drive technology would allow an X-Corps craft to catch up with this ship. Otherwise, fighters would have to be launched from near its intended destination and catch it head-on.

Once engaged, the situation does not improve. As mentioned, the battleship is well armed, sporting several massive weapon systems that our engineers have dubbed 'Quantum Projection Cannons'. These easily out range any terrestrial air to air weapon in the X-Corps arsenal. In addition to their extreme range, these cannons are also very deadly; reports of entire flights of conventional aircraft being obliterated before they could close to weapons range have been received.

It is recommended that alien battleships be intercepted by multiple fighters and attacked simultaneously, in the hopes that the multiple threats will split the alien?s aim long enough to take this ship down. If the threat to X-corp bases is deemed to be low, an alternative course of action may be to allow the vessel to land and then assault it on the ground.

Commanders of such missions should be well trained however, as casualties are likely to be extremely high. We can deduce from their multiple heavy weapon systems, thick armor and sheer size that these alien vessels serve as the capital ships of their fleet and are likely to be among the most heavily crewed ships, serving in troop transport functions as well as combat roles. This indicates that they may be well suited for ground assaults with targets including civilian population centers and possibly X-Corps bases.

In addition to direct combat roles, we have hypothesized that these flagships are also used by the aliens to found alien bases in remote locations, and might also be used to carry high-ranking alien leaders on infiltration missions. This alien warship has the potential to cause irreparable harm to our cause, and must be defeated at every opportunity, though the cost may be high.

Fluff:

"Command, this is Eagle Flight! Eagle Three is down, and I'm taking fire! We can't close the gap, repeat we are out of range! Target is too fast! We're out-gunned! ARGH!!!!" Last transmission from Eagle Flight attempting to engage an alien battleship.

[XC-1]

Short Entry:

Superficially like a conventional aircraft, the XC-1 Assault Raptor actually uses the most advanced airframe currently available. However, all similarities end there, as all internal systems in the aircraft are anything but conventional and make use of the most recent technical innovations in a combat aircraft. The XC-1 outperforms all other previous designs by decades. This is primarily due to technological advances in hydrogen technology, the development of Electro Active Polymers Actuators, and its advanced avionics and weapons systems design.

Body:

Late in the 20th century, it was already foreseen that the world's dwindling petroleum resources would only last at most 40-50 years. Thus scientists began experimenting on Hydrogen engines, and a little after the turn of the century, some working prototypes had begun testing. These prototypes produced 3 times the energy output of petroleum-based engines of the same displacement. Years of refinement and the use of Pulse Detonation techniques of combustion have increased this output twice over.

However, the real problem of hydrogen engines was the storage of its fuel. Hydrogen had to be kept at 20 degrees Kelvin to maintain its liquid state. Even then, it required 4 times the space of petroleum fuels. This made Hydrogen based vehicles too bulky for practical military use. Recent developments made in carbon nanotube technologies have made feasible the storage of hydrogen at atmospheric pressure and temperature. Scientists have discovered a method of infusing nanotubes into metal hydrides for use as 'tanks'. The concept of this storage system is similar to that of a sponge.

The nanotubes infused into the metal hydride 'tank' can absorb up to 70% of its weight in hydrogen. Releasing of this hydrogen is achieved through thermal excitement of the storage system. This has eliminated the need for the excessively large tanks needed to store liquid hydrogen, and prevents unwanted detonation while the hydrogen is stored. The XC-1 is the first military aircraft to make use of the new storage system, and is the first production aircraft to ever use hydrogen engines.

Another technological advancement represented in the XC-1 is the first time use of Electro Active Polymer (EAP) Actuators in an aircraft. EAPs are manufactured, carbon-based materials that contract and expand in the presence of an electric field. Before the XC-1 the polymers required ludicrous amounts of electricity to stimulate even the smallest movements. The key was to create a polymer with a higher dielectric constant. Scientists discovered that infusing a polymer with silver ions increased its dielectric constant by a factor of 746.7, thus reducing the required amount of electricity by the same factor.

Applied to the XC-1, this means that electric wires and polymer actuators have replaced the old hydraulic system of conventional aircraft. This not only makes the XC-1 lighter and more space efficient, but also multiplies the aircraft's response rate to near organic levels. Combined with variable control configuration technology and the ability to Vector in Forward Flight (VIFF), the XC-1 is agile beyond what was previously thought possible. The XC-1 uses advanced telemetric and alpha wave technology to enhance its fly-by-wire flight controls. This makes the XC-1's response rate significantly faster than conventional fly-by-wire controls.

This is also the basis for its advanced weapons targeting systems. Combined with its advanced phase variance, rotating Doppler scanner and IR imaging radar systems, this gives the XC-1 unprecedented detection, identification and targeting capabilities. The XC-1 can track, identify, and lock on a target the size of a pigeon at ranges beyond 75 miles. Truly an impressive leap in military aircraft, the XC-1 is the pinnacle of Earth-based aircraft design, and will be essential in the battle to defend Earth from the alien menace.

[XC-22 Eclipse]

Short Entry:

The XC-22 Eclipse Fighter-Transport aircraft is an advanced, alien-technology based, replacement for the XC-11 troop transporter. Possessing a very high top speed, the Eclipse also sports a single weapon pod for limited combat capabilities. For weight and speed reasons the Eclipse is unable to transport any sort of XCAP, limiting it to X-Corp operatives only. With vastly superior capabilities to any earth-based vehicle currently in service, the Eclipse fighter-transport aircraft is a mighty weapon in the war against the alien menace. Production of these awesome craft would greatly aid our cause and may begin at any time.

Body:

With the advent of fighter aircraft based on advanced alien technologies and components, it was only a matter of time before a troop transport derivative was engineered that took full advantage of these technological developments. Representing the first time an alien aircraft design has been innovated rather than replicated, the Eclipse troop transporter is a faster, more maneuverable, and more reliable transport than the XC-11 model. It surpasses earth-based counterparts by leaps and bounds.

Initially, the Eclipse was to be a refitted XC-11 design. However, after the obvious superiority of alien technology became clear to the X-Corps designers, a shift towards a design featuring core alien characteristics was inevitable. This craft utilizes the same basic components as any other alien craft; namely a Xenium-122 based power source, an alien navigation system and a structure composed of alien alloys. By applying knowledge gained from the XC-2 StarFire project, engineers were able to hybridize human design with superior alien technology to create a craft that puts X-Corps in a position to represent a serious threat to the alien menace.

The Eclipse uses a heavily modified alien UFO chassis as a design base. The need for a cargo bay large enough to carry an entire complement of X-Corps soldiers into battle ensured that the overall size of the Eclipse would be significantly larger than its XC-2 StarFire counterpart. Because of all this, certain compromises were required in terms of flight performance. The Xenium-122 based power source had to be shifted forward, which in turn affected the rate of energy transfer between it and the engines. Consequently, engine performance is slightly lower in the Eclipse when compared to the XC-2 StarFire, which translates into a lower top speed. Since our understanding of alien technology is still only rudimentary, no solution to this problem has been put forward yet. However, this is of little importance since the Eclipse far outperforms the XC-11 in both V.T.O.L capabilities and in maximum cruise velocity. Given that the Eclipse is designed as a troop transport first and fighter craft second, it is this ability that is of paramount importance to X-Corps.

Because so much room needed to be reserved for cargo, there were concerns among the X-Corps engineers that the Eclipse's maximum takeoff weight would simply be too much for it to bear. However, giving true testament to the undisputed supremacy of the Xenium-122 based power sources and engines, initial field tests of the first Eclipse prototypes exceeded vertical thrust requirements by over 320%. In essence, there were absolutely no concerns about this craft's ability to airlift troops to a designated hot-spot landing zone.

While certainly not intended as a heavy assault craft, the Eclipse is still equipped with a single weapon pod, located under the nose of the aircraft. X-Corps felt it was in the best interests of the Eclipse for it to have offensive/defensive capabilities. Although initial designs features two weapon pods, just as in the XC-2 StarFire, it became apparent later that a redesign was required due to the unforeseen complications related to the safety of the passengers aboard. In the event of a catastrophic weapon pod malfunction, the resulting explosion could potentially cause significant harm to the occupants of the cargo hold. In order to ensure that the troops on board reach their destination with the lowest degree of risk, a single nose-mounted weapon pod was decided to be the best configuration for the Eclipse. Although this limits the ability of the Eclipse to serve as an interceptor, it does not affect its design mission in any way. Furthermore, the craft is unable to safely and easily accommodate X-Corps Assault Platforms due to its limited size. Increasing the structure to support XCAPs as well as a compliment of troops would have significantly impacted flight performance. The entire science team hopes that this issue will be addressed in future aircraft designs. However, this weakness is a small price to pay for increased speed and firepower ultimately inherent to the Eclipse.

Plasma Rifle

Short Entry:

The plasma rifle is the alien equivalent of the light rifle, and is a staple weapon in their invasion. Powerful, fast, and accurate, this rifle outperforms Terran-based weaponry in every category…except cost. This weapon is also very versatile, and is suitable for use as an entry weapon, long range support, and open-area combat. The manufacture of this rifle requires Xenium, but it is predicted that if X-corps remains successful in its missions, sufficient quantities of these weapons will be recovered to ensure that no shortage will be encountered.

Body:

The plasma rifle itself bears all the marks of plasma technology – magneto-dynamic prongs on the front, feeder tubes on the sides, and the grip-glove favored by the aliens. A handle is attached near the front of the weapon, allowing for increased stability and therefore accuracy when firing. The weapon can be fired one-handed, but due to the size of the weapon, accuracy is significantly reduced when used in this manner. The burst fired is capable of considerable damage, primarily from the incredible heat but direct contact will transfer sufficient energy to rip atoms and molecules apart.

The three-prong design and long barrel offers increased accuracy, collimation, and plasma capacity over the smaller pistol design. The larger plasma generation chamber allows for more powerful blasts. The rifle is suitable for a variety of functions, as it is light enough to be carried by weaker agents, but powerful enough to take down most aliens with only a few hits. As an entry weapon, the most significant advantage is the added damage when compared with the plasma pistol, as both weapons have similar firing speeds. At longer range, the weapon performs admirably as well, though lacking the penetrating power of heavier alien weapons.

With the advent of this new technology, it is highly recommended that the X-corps begin using an all-plasma approach, delegating less advanced weaponry to non-critical missions and all other non-explosive payload to the scrap pile. A word of caution however: due to our proven inability to manufacture Xenium, it may be wise to cache a few of the less advanced weapons, in the case of clip shortages.

[TERROR SHIP]

Short Entry:

The alien [Terror Ship] is one of the greatest threats to X-Corp and the world’s efforts. Large, well armed, and carrying a compliment of alien soldiers and terrorists with sufficient power to exterminate a metropolis in a matter of hours, they pose a significant threat both in the air and on the ground.

Body:

When airborne they can use their speed, armor and maneuverability to a much greater advantage. Possessing a large and extremely powerful array of plasma cannons and plasma "torpedoes", the [terror ship] can make an almost instantly lethal jet of plasma, quickly vaporizing the hulls and structure of terrestrial craft.

Our only advantage over these lethal alien craft is the superior range of our weapons. However this is largely negated by the alien's superior speed and fuel capacity. Thus, the X-Corp tactical advisers cannot emphasize enough that attempting to fight a hit and run battle against an alien [Terror Ship] would be both futile and fatal.

Although incredibly risky, downing a [terror ship] before it is able to land and carry out its mission should be a high priority for every X-Corp air squadron. If the Aliens are allowed to land, X-Corp soldiers may not be able to arrive in time to save every civilian life in the city. On board a downed [terror ship], troops will often encounter hordes of both alien soldiers and the feared alien "terrorists". These terrorists are hostile, intelligent creatures and machines whose singular purpose has shown to be inflicting fear and death on any human life form. We cannot be sure, but our preliminary evidence indicates that these terror races are often associated with a specific controlling alien race. X-Corp field officers should be advised that the numbers of alien soldiers and terrorists aboard these ships may quickly demoralize soldiers and so careful tactics and leadership should be used.

When a [terror ship] lands it will deposit 90-95% of its crew (a skeleton force made up of the highest-ranking officers and a navigator remain on the ship to pilot it) and will then immediately leave the atmosphere. The disembarked Alien troops will then, in a frighteningly efficient and organized manner, begin searching the immediate area, killing civilians and destroying human infrastructure.

These terror missions are the strongest indication that the aliens are aware of the delicate political balance on which X-Corp relies. The terror missions are, when viewed in mathematical terms, minor incursions. However, the political and psychological repercussions of a terror attack far outweigh the relatively small civilian casualties. The nations who support X-Corp have made no secret of their willingness to cease funding our expensive organization if we are incapable of defending them. No matter how many alien vessels are eliminated in X-Corp covert deployments, civilians will pay disproportionate attention to the organization's much more dramatic defeats. Increases in terror attacks show that the aliens view them as a valuable tool for harassing, disrupting and otherwise dividing mankind, where a full scale and direct assault might unite them into a much more powerful force.

Fluff:

"Sure the guys in command talk about psychological warfare and world morale, but you know what? I think a lot of the reason that these [terror ships] are flying about is because the aliens are enjoying themselves. If that’s the case, then they'll know by now what I enjoy. I enjoy shooting those bugs down."

[supply Ship]

Short Entry:

The alien’s presence on Earth is a mystery. We still have many unanswered questions. Why are they here? Where are they from? How did they get here? Now that we have details on the alien [supply Ship] we are presented with further questions. What are these ships supplying and where are these supplies coming from?

Body:

Investigating the ship allows us to draw certain theories regarding these questions. It seems these ships were designed for maximum capacity; each floor is an enormous space for cargo with a variety of fitted storage containers forming an integrated part of the ship. Only a small section is devoted to any kind of ship systems. Command systems and armaments have apparently taken second priority to storage space in the design of these vessels. The small number of power systems is reflective of this; fully loaded a supply ship is only just capable of sustaining its top speed. This makes the ship, in essence, an enormous flying warehouse, which is relatively slow in the air and, for its size, poorly armored.

Pilots of intercepting aircraft should not be fooled into thinking that these ships will make easy targets however. The ship's sheer size and bulk allows it to absorb a great deal of damage. Critical and delicate components are buried deep inside the ship and a hit to a cargo area will scarcely cause a change of course. Terrestrial aircraft have been known to break off pursuit after simply running out of ammunition.

The craft is also well armed for a supply ship, though has a much shorter range than ships of the same size. However approaching this craft without the right weapons often gets a pilot and his aircraft decommissioned for several months or blasted into molecular oblivion. Even the most skilled pilots often keep their distance from this craft.

The high-powered weapons on board, along with its capacity for carrying, indicate that the supplies are deemed important. We can only assume that the great majority of alien supply vessels are en route to alien bases. As mentioned earlier, much of the storage space on the alien vessel is an integral part of the ship. This seems to suggest that when the ship has arrived at its destination it is simply broken down into modules, possible to attach onto existing structures. If supply ships indeed are rendezvousing with alien bases, then these bases likely increase in size with each new ship.

These ships should be targeted and intercepted as a high priority, in order to disrupt the alien’s activities. Ground assault on an intact vehicle is unlikely since getting one to land somewhere other than an alien base will be tricky. If shot down and successfully assaulted however, the design of the craft is poorly suited for close combat. Small corridors and holds full of closely packed containers make firefights especially difficult, rendering many combat tactics ineffective. But the chance to recover such a large amount of alien artifacts and supplies is a very tempting target, helping the X-Corps as it hinders the alien forces.

Fluff:

"It's a supply ship, for goodness sake. It’s like shooting a ferry. What could it possibly do t...[static]"- Former U.S. pilot John Tik, soon after the start of X-corps.

Barracks

Short Entry:

As our operations continue to expand so does our need for additional personnel to help us continue to operate at full efficiency. As a result, new residential facilities will be needed to accommodate our growing force. Our barracks were designed to fulfill exactly that need.

Body:

Built from a heat-resistant polymer alloy, this room's construction blocks and reflects heat, keeping it at comfortable levels regardless of external influences. This, combined with the ergonomic two-floor design and the recreation facilities built in, creates a comfortable environment able to support up to 50 personnel.

Each barracks contains the following:

? A Small Galley Kitchen manned by two cooks who prepare a meal at the end of each shift.

? Exercise equipment such as weights, fold-up benches and bicycles that are stored in specific compartments when not in use. Personnel are advised to spend at least one hour per day exercising, to remain in shape. X-Corps Special Operatives are required to exercise at least 2 hours per day if they are not assigned to a mission.

? A Recreation/Living room equipped with two plasma screen televisions, Computers with Internet access, either a Pool or a Ping-Pong table and usually some other miscellaneous recreation material. This equipment may seem a little extravagant to the casual observer but X-Corps operations recognize the needs of our employees to relax after the strenuous work and long hours they go through.

? Sleeping accommodations are similar to Japanese "capsule hotel" beds. There are 35 total 1,5 x 1,5 x 3 soundproof capsules, each one also containing a washroom, lockers and a videoconference telephone as well. Each capsule is created from bulletproof and energy resistant alloys and is able to lock securely from the inside. This is a precaution and a security measure to protect anyone sleeping from being surprised in his sleep by a potential base raid. All non-combat personnel can secure themselves in their capsules until reinforcements arrive and the area is cleared. Most of the Facility's capsules are placed on the upper floor as the lower floor is mostly reserved for the other facilities.

Each base that needs resident personnel such as soldiers, scientists or engineers must include at least one living quarters facility.

Alien Containment

Short Entry:

Several times we have managed to recover a live alien specimen only to have it die within our care. It has become apparent that we need a new kind of prison; one that can effectively contain all kinds of life forms while being able to manipulate the internal environment.

To this end, we have designed the MK III "Alcatraz" Containment Chamber which improved on previous designs that did not account for proper atmospheric conditions or provide effective containment for certain alien species.

Body:

Each Alcatraz chamber has 0.5m thick concrete walls that are reinforced with electromagnetic conductors and barriers that severely disrupt any form of known awareness and can withstand several tons of force. The advanced configuration of the environmental control allows us to create any kind of atmosphere/pressure that we need. Usually the environment is modified in such a way as to keep the specimen in a sedated condition. However, as a secondary security measure, we can modify it to become lethal.

The chamber also sports advanced automated security and surveillance measures that monitor the specimen within and have very delicate warning procedures that trigger automatically over any sudden change in behavior. The airlock-style doors are made from totally secure materials and can only open with a combination of security measures. Three unauthorized tries for access or a breach in the chamber walls result in the instant termination of the contained specimen.

Finally, the cell provides a small backup generator system to power the security systems. The Alien Containment Facility includes 10 Alcatraz chambers, as well as a surveillance room. We feel confident that the aliens we capture in the field will stay securely within our care.

Fluff:

"What happened to the two previous designs? Well, after 4 aliens had slowly suffocated in their cells we started to get the hint. We scrapped the MK I, studied some alien physiology and installed some pretty smart environmental manipulators, to make them feel at home and all... Well, it proved a bit too comfortable it seems. I heard the Research Department at the Roswell base was totally wrecked when their captive woke up and I personally saw two guards commit suicide in front of my eyes before I caught on. The idiot was still grinning when I blew his brains out... Obviously the MK II needed some heavy security adjustments... and a new paint job." - Yohan Jarlsdottir, Director of Security and Alien Containment.

General Storage

Short Entry:

The General Storage facility is a highly efficient space, utilizing a variety of methods and equipment to maximize storage within the smallest possible space. Bases that need any type of supplies, weapons, or research materials will need a storage facility to hold those items. A storage facility is essential to virtually every X-Corps base.

Body:

As the initial blueprints for our underground base were designed, it began to dawn on us that the layout of our storage facility was going to be critical. Furthermore, as the demand for extra space kept increasing exponentially, the initial warehouse designs were deemed highly inefficient to manage effectively the variety and quantity of items we were going to store and also be able to withstand the possible shock of a military assault.

Thus, a new Storage and Retrieval system was developed, using a prototype semi-automatic racking mechanism operated by a number of highly trained quartermasters. The end result proved a success and a facility complex was designed to complement it.

The General Storage Facility, as it is modestly named, is capable of storing a high amount of items within its 25 meter walls while still able to retrieve them expeditiously. The warehouse sports a 5m height, solid concrete walls, double roller doors and an advanced fire protection system.

Common or lightweight items are usually stored in the lower shelves, while the bigger or more valuable items are stored in blast proof containers that are suspended from the ceiling and accessed using a computerized lift that maneuvers by way of tracks built upon the ceiling. Aside from the semi-automatic mechanisms, the warehouse is also equipped with more mundane retrieval means, such as forklifts and ladders for the occasional simple need. This mixed configuration has proved to be the best and most secure way for managing our inventory.

Fluff:

"Remember when we found a rubber bunny inside that rocket launcher while cleaning? Imagine your target's surprise when his impending doom goes “squeak”. Now that'd be worth seeing!"

Gravity Barrier Defense

Short Entry:

During the research and testing of the large gravity engines of the Avenger, our scientists found that the large engines were able to control gravity waves for an incredible distance. In theory, a large enough land-based Xenium engine could control gravity around an X-Corps facility, and protect it from attack. This is the basis of the Gravity Barrier, which slows approaching UFOs enough to allow our defenses an additional strike.

Body:

The Gravity Barrier was originally proposed to protect X-Corps facilities from possible alien bombardment. Research into the incredible materials at the alien's disposal has cast a dark shadow over the safety of our underground facilities. If the aliens were to attempt to make use of a Xenium bomb, they could theoretically create explosions with power greater than that of a Hydrogen bomb. Our underground facilities would not be able to hold against such an attack. The original gravity shield design would deflect these "fusion bombs", and use gravity waves to keep the base integrity intact. However, research into this design was put on hold, as testing has shown that an extremely powerful field would be required to repel a device of any size, and creating such a complicated and massive device was completely beyond our reach.

This has led to a redesign of the gravity barrier. A gigantic specialized gravity engine is constructed within a 25-meter facility. It is capable of generating a very powerful and very long distance gravity disturbance, with a minimal net gravity, which is directed at the incoming target. This field interferes with the alien propulsion systems, causing them to produce a fraction of their power. To do this considerable pilot control and engine resources are required to protect against the powerful tidal forces. This in return slows the incoming target to a fraction of its speed. This will allow our slower base defenses to fire at the target with a vastly increased chance to hit, and will allow ample time to rearm the defenses to fire again, if the target is found early enough.

Unfortunately, controlling such a large engine and keeping it stable stretches the limits of even the best of our Xenium engine pilots. The effect of having extra gravity barrier facilities active would be catastrophic, as the gravity wave interference that two engines would cause to each other will make them impossible to control. The result would send uncontrollable and extremely destructive gravity waves everywhere, capable of crushing an X-Corps base. We have built internal fail safes to shut down the field as soon as the second wave of defenses are fired, but be advised, that only one gravity barrier facility can be safely active within an X-Corps base.

As a side note, the tidal forces of the field also cause considerable water condensation in the air. This has led independent contractors of the funding nations to pursue possible weather control technologies using this device. Further research into this technique during peacetime is needed to make it efficient enough for use.

Hangar

Short Entry:

Our hangars have been designed to allow for flexible storage of all X-Corps aircraft. Regular maintenance and combat repairs can be carried out in the 50-meter facility using the integrated maintenance bay. Platform lifts provide access to the surface, where standard takeoffs and VTOLs are performed.

Body:

Flooring grills are used throughout the facility to aid in cleanup, where oil and other fluids are collected and filtered for proper disposal. Standard refueling procedures are carried out using shielded fuel storage tanks, allowing us to top up an aircraft without fear of fuel leaks and explosions. In addition to a reinforced outer casing, each tank has a flexible Kevlar internal bladder with fire retardant gel between the bladder and the outer casing.

Each hanger includes a lift platform that raises the aircraft to the surface for take off and landing. While it is possible for our top pilots to perform VTOLs from within the hangar, this is considered an excessive risk and could be impossible for a damaged aircraft. A scissor lift is operated by hydraulic presses located under the facility floor, and a ratcheted safety joint in the scissors keeps the ramp from falling in case of total hydraulic failure. The hangar roof is level with the landing pad on the surface, and retracts along the facility ceiling using recessed tracks. At full extension the lift is flush with the surface and does not damage landing gear during take off and landing. The hangar roof consists of reinforced concrete, and is surfaced to match the surrounding area. While capable of supporting a significant amount of weight, the hangar bay doors might be a potential weak point in our base's defense. Once the lift is flush with the surface, the aircraft can follow standard take-off procedures, using VTOL or the built-in catapult launcher from the surface.

Note: Due to recent hazing of recruits, infrared sensors have been installed along the edge of the lift platform and aimed at the ceiling to detect any objects hanging off the edge of the lift and stop its accent. This is to prevent possible equipment damage or amputation as the lift reaches surface level. Personnel must clear the lift prior to activation.

Fluff:

"It looks pretty high from up here, Jackson! I can hardly see you down there. Stop this lift before it reaches the top, the bay doors are still closed! Stop kidding around, this isn't funny!" Private Josh Maxwell, newly initiated.

Alien Transmission Decoder

Short Entry:

We have long suspected that the aliens used a tachyon based communications. Unfortunately, due to the faster than light nature of tachyons, we were unable to design detection systems that triangulate the positions of the UFOs based on their communications. However, with data recently obtained by Section 9 (Interrogations), we are now capable of decoding their transmissions. Nevertheless, due to our inability to understand the alien's language, we can only obtain data regarding the speed, heading, and type of UFO, as well as the race of the crew and their mission profile.

Body:

Generally when recovered UFOs are stripped down to their component parts, tachyon emitters as well as receivers are a standard part of all designs, from the various scouts to the larger classes of UFOs. Interestingly, the tachyon emitters are not only connected to the communications console, but are also intrinsically linked to the navigation and propulsion systems, and in the larger classes of UFOs, overbuilt for the task of communications.

Tachyons have been theorized to be the possible carriers for faster than light, or true instantaneous, communications. Unfortunately, that which makes it so attractive for FTL communications also makes it hard to use, that is to say, technology to detect tachyons at faster than light speed had so far eluded researchers. However, the alien invaders not only brought their advanced weapons technology to the battlefield, but also their tachyon-based communications system. Despite the fact that the tachyon detection system can easily be replicated using human technology, our researchers had a somewhat harder time understanding the recovered communications system and the aliens’ transmissions.

Due to its very nature, tachyon based communication systems are also heavily quantum based, and as a result, have built-in quantum encryption. The tachyon emissions are generated by using a series of quantum particles, and in order to receive the transmissions, the exact states of all the quantum particles used in the emitter must be known beforehand. Due to the ability of a single quantum particle to exist in eight states simultaneously, as well as not knowing the exact number of quantum particles used by the aliens when they transmit, this has left us with a very cheap, very easy to reproduce and very high tech, faster than light radio, with nothing to listen to.

Fortunately, recent intelligence obtained by Section 9 of the X-Corps Research and Development department has provided us to the key to intercepting alien transmissions. Partially because the aliens do not use a common language, our best linguists have so far been unable to translate their transmissions. The fact that they do not use a common language lead us to suspect that there may be a telepathic part to the transmissions, and even though it is tempting to uncover and implement that as well, the risks of unintentionally revealing ourselves outweigh the advantage of understanding the aliens. However, based on the language used, we are able to identify the race of the UFO's crew. Also, we have been able to decode information from the header of the transmissions which contain data regarding the type of UFO, it's coordinates and heading, as well as mission profile.

Nevertheless, there is still one piece of the puzzle still missing. The fact that the tachyon emitters are closely linked to the navigation and propulsion systems are far more complex than need be, yet even with the tachyon emitters removed both navigations and propulsions systems still function without any sort of instability. As such, we suspect that the tachyon emitters may only be needed for some sort of functions that do not occur during normal flight. This, combined with the fact that it is the Navigator ranked aliens that have the detailed knowledge required to use the tachyon communications system hint that the tachyon emitters may very well play a role in the alien's faster than light travel. Unfortunately, we currently do not have enough detailed information on hand to do more than speculate.

Research Lab

Short Entry:

Since we are not familiar with alien technology, we have designed laboratories that will cover all the aspects of modern science that we are bound to encounter. Our initial intelligence reports that aliens are using highly advanced craft and armaments, their movements are seemingly erratic, and their motives are unknown. Conventional weapons seem highly ineffective against them while our toughest armor hardly matters. Against these impossible odds our greatest and only weapon is science.

Body:

The research lab is designed as a 25-meter facility over two floors and contains different types of R & D areas separated by soundproofed, modular Plexiglas. If required, the lab has a design that is easily customized to focus on one specific subject. As such, up to 50 scientists can be employed by a single laboratory, usually working in 3 shifts.

The Laboratory is further divided into two separate areas. The unrestricted area is accessible by all personnel and is designed to research the alien technology we may encounter. This area includes a physics lab, a chemical lab, and a powerful supercomputer which is linked with our central mainframe to allow the flow of information within our private network.

The restricted area is strictly off limits to unauthorized personnel, and deals primarily with the "dirty" work, such as alien autopsies and questioning. Procedures and experiments conducted within are not to be shared to unauthorized personnel. This sector contains an interrogation room, the bioresearch and engineering lab, a small alien containment chamber for those captured alive and a morgue for those who were not.

Large Neudar Facility

Short Entry:

The large Neudar is a recently developed larger and more advanced version of the small Neudar that has both better detection range and detection rate through the use of CCDs and an advanced supercomputer. Multiple large Neudars can improve the detection rate of UFOs that are within range. We recommend that at least one large NEUDAR be built at every base.

Body:

The large Neutrino Detection Array (NEUDAR), like the small Neudar consists of three large, underground tanks filled with distilled water. However, these three tanks are twenty percent larger than their counterparts in the small Neudar and use an extremely sensitive layer of Charged-Couple Devices (CCDs) that enable the large Neudar to collect very precise data regarding the neutrinos that it detects. Instead of using a cluster of computers, the large Neudar uses the new HELIX III supercomputer to do the triangulation of the source. Through the use of the HELIX III, the large Neudar is more capable of separating the sources of neutrinos, and therefore has better tracking capabilities than the small Neudar.

Unfortunately, the CCDs used in the construction of the detector tanks are not only much more expensive than the light sensors used in the small Neudar, they also have a tendency to burn out. As such, they have to be replaced regularly, resulting in higher maintenance costs. The use of a HELIX III supercomputer also adds considerably to the expense of the large Neudar system. Nevertheless, the detection rates and range of the large Neudar means that it is worth the extra costs and time required to build it.

The construction of additional Neudars can increase the sensitivity of the entire network as a whole as well as speed up the triangulation of the source. This is because the addition of tanks not only increases the chances of detecting a neutrino burst, but also provides additional directional data not only for use in the calculation of the source, but also as a source of data verification.

Due to the fact that NEUDARs are located underground and are based on passive detection, they prove to be undetectable to external sources. This is a valuable asset as it will prevent the alien invaders from locating our bases with ease.

Laser Defense Facility

Short Entry:

As this war unfolds, it becomes apparent that even state of the art conventional weapons have only limited effect upon the alien technology. Undeniable proof is the recent razing of several non-X-Corps military installations which were considered to be some of the most well protected bases in Earth. This has further stressed that fact that even though we may be making progress in our struggle, once the aliens pass into a serious offensive, we will find our bases lacking the necessary defensive firepower to resist them. Fortunately, recent developments in laser technology have given us a foothold with which to design a base defense facility that provides firepower of a magnitude never seen before.

Body:

Having surpassed recent overcharge and focus problems, the research department has provided us with the blueprints for the construction of a laser-based aerial defense and countermeasure mechanism. That, combined with a modified GP-02 turret platform that allows for 360 degree rotation and precision tracking, creates the basis for the Laser Defense LCP-"Phaser" Facility.

The main gun includes a primary discharge capacitor and three secondary build-up capacitors. The mechanism works in a 3-phase mode. Once the firing procedure is commenced, a secondary capacitor begins building a charge, and within one second the charge is ready and then is "transferred" to the primary capacitor where the lazing material is stored. The charge excites the material and merges it into a beam. The beam is then focused through the amplifier and released at the correct vector. As this procedure is completing, the two other capacitors are also generating a charge, at different phases, so that as soon as the first beam is released, a second charge is transferred to the primary capacitor. This has the effect that once the weapon fires, it releases a constant beam of energy that doesn't overload the primary capacitor due to its 3-phase nature (ergo the name "Phaser").

The platform is also equipped with three low-power lasers that are linked to the visual system of the controller and track the target by vision. Once they lock into the enemy, they form a triangular path that provides unparallel accuracy. Also, thanks to the speed of the laser, the path finding mechanisms installed are hardly needed except for the fastest of UFOs.

The facility is designed in a way that provides the maximum speed and security. The main weapon platform is mounted on a central block. A corridor runs around the weapon and is used for maintenance and also acts as a buffer in the case of an explosion. The weapon controls are placed in a secure console at the end of the room and the cooling and power systems are placed in blast-proof sub-sections to avoid malfunction by enemy weapon damage.

The phaser is considered to be the pinnacle of human development in the offensive laser mechanisms and is recommended as a future choice for base defense.

[stun Baton]

This device is designed with one purpose in mind, and that is to incapacitate an enemy soldier without killing him. In this field it is truly exceptional. In testing every single animal and human fell unconscious after a single encounter with a [stun Baton]. It has been designed by using existing counter-rioting stun rods and extending them further using cutting edge technology.

The world's best biophysicists have developed this piece of technology by testing on terrestrial beings, so it is not necessarily going to be 100% effective against extraterrestrial beings. This is despite there is an on-board computer which automatically calculates the estimated force needed to incapacitate the being presented to it, because the computer has not been programmed using alien specifications so it may not be correct when encountering aliens with vastly different physiology’s than the ones used for testing.

From the outside, this device appears to be like any other crowd-controlling device, with a handle and a tip that discharges a powerful electric shock. On the inside, however, is one of the most impressive technological displays in any modern weapon. The precise voltage required is determined by the aforementioned computer. This is immediately fed to a capacitor, which begins to charge. Within milliseconds, the capacitor is charged to the required amount, and the rod is ready to discharge into the enemy. As the tip of the rod makes contact with the enemy and discharges, the electric shock disperses into the target's body, and two places in particular are targeted. One is the voluntary nervous system, and the other is the heart. Both are severely disrupted by the minimum of shocks; the only trouble is getting the exact voltage to overcome the resistance of the body that the shock has to travel through. For example, if the voltage is too great, then the resultant amperage may be too high. If this occurs, critical damage may be done to the nervous system, and in particular, the heart; cardiac arrest and death may occur very quickly. On the other hand, if the voltage and consequent amperage are too low, then the subject may either be unaffected, or merely stunned for a very short period of time. The latter case is usually preferable, and this is why the computer on the device has been programmed to err on the side of caution, in line with current riot control models. This is to ensure that the rod does not accidentally kill anyone.

It is the advice of the weapons department that this weapon be used sparingly in tactical situations, with caution, because actual contact is required with the enemy to ensure that this weapon is effective.

I did a couple changes that i thought were neccesary but mostly just proofed

[XM-6 "Perforator" (SOCOM)]

STATISTICS

Shot type: Accuracy: TU Cost:

Auto [60%] [54%]

Snap [60%] [18%]

Aimed [78%] [30%]

Damage Armour Piercing [26]

Clip Size [12]

The XM-6 is a 9mm Beretta/Glock hybrid, featuring better handling, damage, and rate of fire. Its sole flaw is that these features come at the expense of accuracy. The XM-6 produces penetration that is often lethal in headshots, but not much else. The largest advantage of this weapon is that due to its small caliber, it often stuns an alien rather than killing it, allowing X-Corps scientists a rare opportunity to study live aliens and interrogate them for information regarding their military agendas.

“Today, Trooper Wun Hung-Lao presented us a written report detailing the performance of the XM-6 under combat conditions with these so called...alien beings. If this report is indeed correct, all military personnel should be immediately equipped with the XM-6 so they can effectively deal with close quarter situations. Accuracy under these circumstances is less of an issue when compared with firepower and ease of use, meaning that the XM-6 can play a significant role on the battlefield. Until alternate weaponry is produced, I will be recommending the XM-6 to the review board and all military personnel" -Department of Logistics (Tom J. Fergus)

The XM-6 tactical pistol is Earth's finest achievement in the side arms industry. Used worldwide by law enforcement, military personnel, and small portions of organized crime, this side arm remains unmatched by any other pistol manufactured on Earth today. Because of its firepower and high rate of fire, the XM-6 is vastly superior to approximately 66% of Earth's rifles, making well over half practically redundant. For this reason, governments worldwide have banned commercial sale of the weapon and prohibited use by civilian and household security corporations. However, even though strictly enforced policies are maintained, the XM-6 continues to find its way into the hands of criminal organizations.

The XM-6 combines a classic recoil based principle with a magnetic force concept, making function smoother and more reliable. This newly designed system begins its operation when a cartridge is fired. The force created by the cartridge sends the bolt sliding back along magnets. By placing these magnets on the bolt and on the bolt chamber, magnetic repulsion is created. When the bolt slides backward it uses this magnetic repulsion as a non-friction cushion, increasing the bolts momentum and effectively reducing maintenance. Once the rear spring has fully compressed, a pin attached to the trigger piece temporarily locks the bolt in place.

To keep this pistol in league with most modern rifles, the [XM-6] fires a depleted uranium 4.7mm shell. The heat produced by this cartridge is absorbed by modern heat dispersing alloys woven into the barrel. Due to the reasonable amount of kickback produced, laser sights are considered unreliable and sole use of notched sights incorporated above of the pistol is recommended.

"I can't wait to take this baby into the combat zone again; clearing out a house is a breeze. The facial reactions of the aliens that get hit by it are a pure Kodak moment, even more so are the house owners when they see their furniture. If I ever see one of those large aliens I’ve been hearing rumors about, I’m going to give it a taste of the Ol' [XM-6.]" -Private Wun Hung-Lao (Reported MIA at Terror Zone Beta 9-5.4)

Does anyone know what cullimation means? Microsoft word doesn't recognize it, so please tell me

[Plasma Pistol]

The plasma pistol is the most compact of the aliens’ handheld payload. It is more powerful than a Terran [light rifle], and is also has more accuracy when firing quickly due to the ease of aiming and balanced recoil. It is highly recommended that any remaining [light rifles] and [XM-6 pistols] be marked outdated and promptly liquidated with the advent of this new technology.

In this model of plasma weaponry, only two prongs are present. This is theorized to be a compromise. More prongs would increase the collimation of the beam and therefore range and accuracy, but would require considerably more power. As this weapon is devoid of any advanced targeting devices, it would appear that it is intended for use only in short range situations or as a backup weapon; a decision considered wise as other alien designs are more powerful and can be replicated more easily than modified.

The barrel is also shorter than on other plasma weapons. As the prongs run the length of the barrel, and therefore are also short, this is another reason that the weapon is not incredibly accurate. However, the barrel performs its function remarkably well despite its small size, considering that human technology had failed to even believe plasma could ever be used in this manner.

Due to the peculiarities of firing plasma, the rate of fire is limited to the equivalent of the [light rifle] on burst mode. Though the barrel and prongs could operate much faster, time is necessary to allow proper mixture of fuel between shots. The fact that this weapon is capable of sustained fire with such a small generation chamber is a testament to alien manufacture and design.

“This has to be my favorite alien weapon. It’s the only one you can actually walk away from, almost intact.” Corporal Simmons, X-Corps, in his stay at the hospital after nearly losing an arm to a plasma blast.
