Is The Amount Of Smoke And Tiles On Fire Limited?

I was playing today and I decided to burn down a jungle map with 4 rocket launchers and a healthy amount of Incendiary rockets. I envisioned the entire map on fire at once....but after my third rocket things wouldnt catch fire or cause any more smoke. Is this a bug or is the amount of smoke and fire limited on the battlescape?

Most files for the game had a cap on the number of records they could hold because of size concerns. Smoke and fire is one of them. Smokref.dat (which stores both smoke and fire info) has a max record size of 400 entries which means only that many tiles can be on fire or occupied by smoke at any one instance. It's unfortunate really, as setting the whole map on fire would have been fun. :)

Well, Seb76 created a fixer/extender frontend for the CE version with 2048 tiles possible. You can find more information about the extender on his User Page at the X-COM wiki. That aspect is still highly experimental though. Better than the way it is now, that's for sure. ;)
