A few of ideas.

 

1. Strength affects hand-to-hand weapon damage.

 

2. Increase visibility. Given that these squares are at most 1m x 1m, 17 square line of sight limit seems kind of short. Maybe there could be a "look farther" button that would increase the line of sight distance for a TU penalty cost, or an option in the mission planner to extend visibility infinitely (like the opposite of a "nighttime mission").

 

3. Holding a button while clicking on a square causes the unit to move without changing direction. So if a unit is facing north, and you hold, say right shift and click on a square west, he will strafe westward.
