Tftd Windowed And No Sound

So I've been trying for awhile to get TFTD to play both in windowed mode and silently. I can do one or the other, but not both.

The collector's edition will run windowed fine using D3Dwindower, but I can't replace the SAMPLE.CAT with an empty file, or the game won't launch. If I replace it with a SAMPLE.CAT from xcom1, then I get garbled noises on certain actions, defeating the purpose of playing silently. Making blank .mid files works fine for the music.

If I use a DOS version that lets me select no music and no sound during the install, I can play silently, but I haven't been able to get a DOS TFTD installation to run windowed. I'm using the DOS CD version to attempt this.

Why not use DOSbox and turn off sound in the DOSbox.conf file? For whatever reason, dosbox kills my video playback. So no luck there.

Why play silently and windowed? So I can watch MST3K while playing, of course. =b

Any help would be appreciated.

I can't really offer much of a solution, but I just take my headphones off when I want to achieve that. ;)

You could also temporarily mute your Windows volume control, or are there sounds you still need to listen for?

I take it he plays MST3K on his computer as well which is why he wants it windowed...

I'd try fixing dosbox that looks like your best bet.. you could try and see if you could change whatever you use to watch movies on your computer to send audio to your line out or aux out instead of what your normally have your sound going through that way just change the speakers to that port and it should only be the movie.
