Defense Turrets On Troop Transports

I was reading some fanfiction and I was thinking that it isn't very realistic to have a troop transport without anysort of armorments at all. Being able to defend itself in air combat isn't needed, but troops are always supposed to have some type of back up when they enter the hot zone. So heres my idea.

On each landing craft, there would be 1 mounted gun on either side of the aircraft. Mounted to the wings. Not only would they automatically (or manually) fire on aliens when they get near, but you' be able to see the immediate area. I mean, it seems very unrealistic that those plains wouldn't even have windows on the sides to see out of.

What do you guys think?

In that topic the idea of 'door gunners' was with the topic of the craft being in the air (on the map) and firing down at ground targets as it patrolled the map.. similar to Vietnam Hueys. My idea is while the aircraft is on the ground and the troops are leaving the craft, the stationary guns would protect them.

At least... thats what I understand from the 'door gunners' idea

So I'm not the only one that has started a map with three aliens in LOS. I take one shot and get a bomb launched into the BACK of the skyranger past ALL my troops to explode and take out most of my squad.

Ahem.

So yeah, the path the Dropship took should be visible to the troops, and there should be some sort of belly-mounted, side-mounted or door mounted turrents to take out bad-guys in the area before you send Rookie Bob out.

HLZ "Anti-(4M|>3r " System:

Fire a pattern of AP and fragmentation explosives(alien or terran design) around the LZ so they explode ten seconds before the troop lander dusts down. Guaranteed to at least get those aliens to back up, although it is not very discrete they are under attack.

Well if you figure in the size of the maps from before, and if they're approxmiate to how things will be for Xenocide as well, the aliens will know your coming whether they hear you or detect your approach through psi ability. Seems to me that whether you decide to rain fire down before you land or not wouldn't matter to the aliens. Well, the ones who aren't dying anyway :)

Well, if you need stealth it wouldn't help much... trying to bomb an alien base would just get a brigade of troops with an armada of Battleships to retaliate... As for terror sites, it would work too, but i prefer either the strafing battlefield or hitting the area around the lz with AP bullets

ever wondered why crashsites and terror sites go away when you don't go to them? Because they are bombed to stop the alien progress. For terror sites, this is done out of sheer neccesity, and YOU will pay for not going to the site by a huge mistrust for your activities.

Also, you can't bomb alien bases, they are underground.

You know, it never occured to me why the sites dissappear when you fail a mission. I like the idea of the area getting bombed. Sometimes you see the ufo fly away when you fail a clean up mission though. I've intercepted and shot the same ufo down twice I believe, but I could be confused with one that landed on it's own.
