Attacking Alien Base Blank Screen

Hi,

I'm using UFO: ENEMY UNKNOWN. When I attack an alien base I get a blank (black) screen with the cursor in the top left corner (the usual golden cursor). On every other tactical map the game loads to the equipment screen just fine. Any thoughts on how to get around this bug?

I am having this exact same problem! I'm running X-COM through Boxer on a Mac- and everything is working well overall. At first, I had no sound effects- but found out how to fix that in this helpful forum. But I have tried to visit two different alien bases, and each time I, like the user above, get a frozen screen with the big cursor up in the left top corner.

I'm really bummed out- I've been doing pretty well up until now- but it seems like a fatal error. Any suggestions on how to get around it would be greatly appreciated!

I seem to remember this bug. It's possible that your copies of the game have got a corrupted alien base module. (The + shaped intersection corridor). For some reason, there's a snippet of the game's C code pasted in there fro some odd reason, so that's what's halting the game.

Try pressing a key on your keyboard. If you get a message like "Can't fit Y axis" or somesuch, keep tapping the keyboard and the map should load up fine. What you'll find when you play the map is that some modules will be completely empty, and have this strange hall-of-mirrors effect where stuff doesn't animate properly, or your mouse pointer leaves images of itself behind.

A solution is to grab a copy of the affect base modules and replace the broken files.

Of course, all this is assuming that this is the problem you are facing.

I appreciate the tips- I'll give these a try tonight. I've been kicking donkey all over Earth but have had to watch helplessly as they build their bases. Hoping tonight is payback time!

Hello, I'm new here, and I had some problems with my X-Com copy as well with this bug. Somewhat glad to see I'm not the only one who's having problems with the Alien Bases.

I figured out how to get out of that blank screen thing with random enter and left-button clicks, but the annoying thing is that corridor bug.

Could you please tell me what the broken files are and where can I get the new files to replace with? Thanks in advance.

Go to StrategyCore's files section and download the v1.2 patch here. Extract that, then copy the Maps and Terrain folders. Now paste that into your main game directory. You should be good to go. ;)

This is a selective patch so to speak as it doesn't touch the sounds or anything else which some people prefer. :)

I have the same problem, but I use Xcom Ufo Defence 1.4 (US DOS version) on dosbox. The patch is for european versions. When I swap the map and terrain folders, no missions work, not only the alien colony raids. Clicking out works, but you get the really annoying mirror effect. I want to play properly. Is there an equivalent patch for US version?

The map formats are identical. There might've been a problem with the swapping.

Instead of swapping, copy all of the MAP and RMP files in the patched version's MAPS directory and paste them directly into your copy's MAPS directory, overwrite any of the files as necessary.

edit:

Just to be more selective, only do this for the XBASE*.* files. Those are files for enemy bases. Or was it UBASE*.*? Just to play it safe, copy both X and U sets.

UBASE files are for alien bases (including Cydonia) while XBASE is for X-COM base modules. ;) BTW, the v1.2 patch only contains the fixed the UBASE_07.map file in the MAPS folder, nothing else (there aren't any more maps which were broken).

I did the base anyway. No aliens spawn in the mirror halls. Are they supposed to?

Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. There is a single spawn point in the center of the module with a priority of 1, and with the numerous spawn points in an alien base it comes down to luck whether it gets filled. You don't really need to muck with .rmp files, those were just fine. Just do the .map file above and you should be set. :)
