Unless it plays significantly like the first two games, I won't be able to work up all that much interest. And the chances of turn-based tactical combat seem slim in the current climate.

I'm with Anaglyph on this one, Xcom games should be turn primarily turn based. Real time (or dual track like apocalypse) requires bigger maps and messes up the turn based action.

With turn based you can savour every shot, every kill, its some much more tense.

Also I prefer smaller maps since I like to fight aliens, not hunt for them for hours and hours....

I suppose I could tolerate real time if it allows for pausing time to give orders. In a way its still pretty well turn based but that depends on what you can do too. Alternatively, there's no reason they couldn't do exactly as Apoc had done, giviing two distinct ways to play.

Any news on whether the X-COMs have been taken down from other download sites? What's more, who's taking them down and can they even tell you who said what?

I disagree, I can really have a taste of battle in pausable-real-time, in turn-based it's all waiting, no excitement at all, I was bored through all of UFO and TFTD battles, whereas in Apoc they were really something. But that's a matter of tastes

I'll concede that real time games do replicate the confusion and chaos of warfare very well, in fact you can exploit this when playing the against human opponents. The trouble is this isn't necessarily a lot of fun.

I enjoyed the turn based EU and TFTDand did play Apoc in real time, because he maps were so big it was really boring to play otherwise.

I only really noticed the difference when I started playing TFTD again last year. Ironman, Superhuman, Turn Based warfare suddenly became really intense and exciting. The suspense of stepping into a room where there might be a an alien became electrifying, especially early on in the game.

If this were real-time half my men would die when I wasn't watching and that role-playing tension would be replaced with frustration.

I do plan to have a go at Iromman on Apoc when I get the chance, but I do recall the levels being rather large.

Thats the problem with compromises, Apoc looks like it has the choice on the surface but in practice you have to play it realtime I suspect.

As for what style it should be(assuming that it IS a new XCOM we will be getting) I believe that it should be like Apoc, with the option for turn based and realtime play. However, I will agreee that the Apoc maps were way to huge for realtime - reduce the map size and it would be perfect.

Or, could it not be a true sequel, and instead be a remake with next-gen graphics? *GASP!*

Ok, I've changed my mind somewhat. Been playing Apoc again - I'd forgotten how much fun it is. So, something in that vein would be fine by me. Would still prefer something turn based that gets back to the original game's feel though.

Personally, I'm not sure trying to offer both styles in one game is the way to go. How much of the stuff that didn't make it into Apoc would have been there if they hadn't had to implement both real time and turn based? Just seems as if there's a big risk of failing to deliver on both counts. Turn based in Apoc was very unsatisfactory compared to the first two games, in my opinion, though it does seem to have some fans.

That would be good too, if unlikely. And you just know that if there ever was a remake there'd be some kind of attempt to "improve" on the original. Now if it was the Gollops doing the improving, fair enough.

Irrational huh? I had a blast with Freedom Force. There are many companies that I wouldn't trust with the X-COM brand, but I can see Irrational doing a good job. With Freedom Force, they really got across to me a sense of really caring about their game, with the attention to details and style. If they carry that same feeling for X-COM, then I have hope. Actually I have more hope for that synergy than I do for Bethesda picking up Fallout 3 (the thought of Morrowind-with-guns gives me nightmares...please let it not be so!).

As for the style, I'm more partial to 1 & 2, but Apoc was fun enough. I need to give it another try. I got annoyed with it, because in my first game, I never got a certain type of UFO taken down, so vital elements of the research tree never got found. When I could get over my frustration and start over, I had more fun, but still never finished it. Whatever the case, I doubt that it'll be a straight-up remake. Unless they're just rabid fans of the original

Heck, how about instead of Battlefield 2142...you had Battlefield X-COM!? And none of this "I wanna play as an alien garbage." A real cooperative online X-COM game...wooooooo! Oh well, rambling now

I think the combat style and philosophies from the first two games should be preserved. However a lot of strategic elements, especially human faction interaction, should be used from Apocalypse.

Watch the video of the gameplay... it's like the same game (with elements of the others), only updated and expanded. Terrain destruction and everything. I have a couple of minor gripes about the animations (grenade tossing and fire, to name two; but hey, it's only graphics, and they may have changed them since making the video), but I don't see anything X-Com has that this game doesn't have, besides age.

Mind you, I still consider UFO:EU to be the best game of all time.

The ability to join in as one of your troops for sniper shots and stuff xD
Just add in a little FPS to this, I always find it cool when you can become a troop and let your guys give you cover, then prone your way manually to a good position and start firing <3
But of course thats REALLY Just for the novelty of doing it, and isnt really needed :3

Btw, the story line has the same averaged dates as Apoc.. Ahaha

Holy shuckeroonies, that game has made a huge progress compared to what I saw before. It looks very good and definitely worth a try.

I discovered that at least two things are missing in ET: Flying units on the battlescape and guided weapons. Those things tend to unbalance X-Com anyway, though.

Also, they only mention 5 UFO types, which seems a small number considering how many types of CAF combat craft are shown. The maps are also not randomly generated; however there are over 200 of them, and they are randomly ordered.

Still looks closer to X-Com than any other game I've seen.

How do you know there are no flying units or guided weapons? we've seen on the gameplay video what they wanted to show us, we won't until until the actual release.

I don't know how final all of it is, but the "brass" in the forums say those things.

They also say soldiers cannot be hired in an unlimited way like in X-Com. Each soldier is unique with his own history, etc. This is somewhat disappointing, as it tends to make the game more linear (unless the personal history etc. are randomized as well).

Yeah I don't know if I would like that, that would mean you have to be very careful not to have your troops die since you cannot replace them therefor losing the game, maybe at a high difficulty people could try this but i think it should be an option.. I have bad missions sometime but think its cheating more or less to restore the game every time.

Still not possible, the soldiers take enough time to 'start' moving to be hit by anything anyway.

Ectually tis easy to dodge stuff in Apoc Real-Time. Especially Spitters though not technically a bullet still a projectile, get fired at and crouch, then uncrouch (or prone/unprone) And some bullets are pretty slow, my fave moment is still jumping off a ledge to miss a rocket launcher shot.

Technically not a sequel; more of a fan remake; but considering the resemblance and the "upgraded" features, I think it's closer to a sequel than Interceptor or Enforcer. Same gameplay, same aliens & more, same types of UFOs, similar armor and vehicles, but set in the future with more tech & variety, better graphics, and so on. Might as well be "X-Com X1" or something.

I never meant to say that ET is a sequel. No one did. It's a fan game.

It is very much like a sequel. Have you seen the gameplay video? It is not a "whole different" game, aside from authorship. The only other differences worth noting are minor cosmetic details. It looks like X-Com; it has the features of X-Com; and it plays like X-Com. heck, it looks more like a sequel of X-Com than Apocalypse. I AM NOT SAYING IT IS A SEQUEL, but that it might as well have been.

I will have to agree as well that it is not a sequel.. Might be easier to think of Movies or just other games, battlefield 1942 and medal of honor come to mind. medal of honor takes place 2 years after, diffrent storyline, same game play (to me anyway) 2 completly diffrent games, you want a sequel play battlefield 2 or 2142. now if the people bought the rights to the game and changed the game name to X-Com it would be a sequal just like EA did with command and conquer, (and messed up the game [hopefully 3 will be better then generals]) the name means alot
