While trying to install Xcom: Terror From The Deep (the Collectors Edition) on my computer running Windows 2000 I recieve a window saying:

C:\WINNT\system32\cmd.exe

C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the Application.

|close| |ignore|

Obviously, close just closes it but ignore does the same thing. I didn't see anything that covered this in the FAQ section. If you can offer any help it would be much appreciated. Thank you.

i now how guys serch for autoexec.nt on your pc and make a copy of id as a backup, looks like from win 2000 and even xp dont uses dos so all insite the file is

REM,hmm,i found over the windows search, copyed to system32 folder

then played a favorite game of mine, next day try to run it same error hmm

looks like that windows deletes autoexec.nt on the start,so the best thing do

do to have a backup file somewhere on hardisk and copy and past each

time when windows loads into system32

works for me :D

is 2000 and xp version of autoexec.nt same version and size?

i have it on my pc i can post it here as attachment

Actually, with DosBox 0.63 (latest version) you can run actually everything ^_^

I will be able to help you if you want, but you should first READ THE WHOLE README FILE CAREFULLY! That's what I've done, and I was able to configure it properly :D

Give it a try! If you can't make it work, reply again and I will post you some links and some tips :)

GAH! I got it to work but it's running horribly. I tried changing the speed and frameskip and no matter what it just wasn't good. It was either so slow that it wasn't fun or was fast and so choppy it wasn't like playing TFTD. I guess I just need to get an old computer with Windows 98.

Actually you should get a good computer. On a 3 GHz P4 it's going really smooth. You're saying it was too fast and choppy and you couldn't find the right number of cycles and frameskips? Well, keep practicing until you get happy with the results. How fast your computer is?

I don't really know all the specs of my comp (my friend built it) but I know that I can run Half-Life 2 and a lot of other big games with no problem at all. So I don't think that my comp is the problem.

OK. Then how many cycles is reported on the Dosbox window when you run TFTD and it's choppy? Did you try many? No improvement at all? How about if you remove the sound (temporarily)?

P.S. I guess I put too many questions. But really, if you say you have a good computer and if you have the DOS (not CE) version of the TFTD, with a small amount of tinkering to find the best numbers for "cycles" and "frame skips" you can have a lot of fun playing TFTD. It's not probably going to be perfect, but still enjoyable :) There's a big pain to try to play some DOS games straight in XP, so Dosbox is perfect for the job. So perfect that I use it even in Win98

Try to copy this one in your dosbox.conf file. It MAY be a good start, but in order to find the perfect settings, it's really up to YOU. Just read the readme file, and you will do fine! ^_^

I'm running a P4 @ 2GHz, 1GB DDR-SDRAM, 128MB All-in-Wonder Radeon 9700 Pro, and (unfortunately) WinXP.

And Gurluas, why don't you like Dosbox? If you want dos, install dos v7 or FreeDOS in your old P1 :P (http://www.freedos.org/)

Well Dan I had put in the original post that I have Collectors Edition. And regular UFO works fine. I've gone all the way to the slowest speed and lowest frames up to the something really high and mixed them and still wasn't good.

BUT! I love X-Com so much that I'm just going to install 98 underneath 2000 and when I wanna play I'll just restart my computer. So I guess problem solved but thanks for all the help.

About the setup part I disagree.

So you launch Dosbox. Will have the prompt "z:>"

Enter the command: "mount c c:\games\xcom2" where "c:\games\xcom2" is the path to xcom2 (if not, adjust to fit).

Then command "c:"

"setup" then you choose whatever you want. Save and exit setup.

Then "terror" and it should start.

Enter the game and spin the Earth. If it's too slow, press Ctrl+F12. Spin again. It will get faster, but at some point it will begin to slow down again.

After you find the optimum number of cycles, if it's still too slow, then play with Ctrl+F8 to increase the "frameskips" only if necessary.

After that you can go to full screen by pressing "Alt+Enter".

About installation, you're telling me you couldn't find an installer that works?

About autoexec.nt, yes, you'll have to wait for somebody who knows about it better. If you would ask for autoexec.bat, that would be easy, but I have no idea how it's supposed to be autoexec.nt :huh?:

not the sound setup... i mean the installation setup.

its windows program not a dos program...

Look, I love when people play TFTD instead of being frustrated trying to install it.

So, while you're waiting for someone to help you install your CE version on XP, wouldn't be a good idea to play the DOS version under DOSBOX?

I see you're anxious to use your CE version, and that's perfectly fine with me, but think of Dosbox as a temporary solution. As soon as you have your TFTD CE installed, you can delete it in an instant. Till then, why don't you try using Google to find the DOS installer for TFTD? You own the CE copy, so it shouldn't be any legal problems when you attempt to play something you already own, isn't it? :)

I'm glad you joined the forums and once you install win98 and you're able to play TFTD, I hope I'll be more helpful if you have any questions.

Anyway, have fun playing (and forget about the installing nightmare) :)

I have found a odd and unlikely solution I don't know the pats for Win2K but all Win NT based OSs use autoexec.nt, command.com and config.nt to control and configure the "pretend DOS" subsystem. I had this problem with WinXP what worked for me was I need to go to command propt and expand the three files the following commands are for WinXP but you'll need to change the path for the Win2K version:

expand D:\i386\config.nt_ c:\windows\system32\config.nt

expand D:\i386\autoexec.nt_ c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt

expand D:\i386\command.co_ c:\windows\system32\command.com

Where D:\ equals my restore partition letter basically what these commands do is replace the damaged, lost, or disfunctional autoexec.nt, command.com, and config.nt files I did it and it worked for me you might have to switch around the paths depending how you have things set up and you would input the letter of your CD-ROM drive I used the letter of my restore partition because thats where all my OS file backups are. Once you do this you may have to reinstall the game but I doubt either way try accessing the game again if it fails to give you the error it worked. Word of advice when testing this out DO NOT load programs like DOSbox or VDSM as that might force the program into a workable mode and thus making it hard to tell if this was sucessful.
