Guest Azrael
An explosion shaped like a skull?
The Master Maniac
I noticed that, too, playing the original X-Com, though my computer runs the game so fast that you only catch a glimpse of it. Maybe it was just a visual gimmick they wanted to play with or something? You're right. Wierd.
[Blehm 98]
the explosion in TFTD are much faster, but they also hold a skull-like shape
EtherImp
I noticed that many years ago playing the game on a very slow computer.. The explosions would happen very slow, so you had alot of time to make it out.. yes, definately shaped like a skull.
Paladin
Yup, it is...Might be an artistic gimmick, or an easter egg, I dunno
j'ordos
Yup, it is...Might be an artistic gimmick, or an easter egg, I dunno an easter egg would be rather unlikely, it was very easy to spot, if you had a computer it was supposed to run on.TFTD has the same explosion when on land, underwater I didn't think it resembled a skull, but who knows
Paladin
Then it's just an artistic thingie... IMHO at least.
The Master Maniac
Well, I did notice that the game definitely tried to shoot for the more "modern-day Japanimat-ed comic book" style, while the second emulated your standard, campy 40's-era horror movie. I imagine the skull-shaped explosion was just an artistic articulation, made to accent the fact that "hey, it's a freaking explosion." The skull shape is way too well-defined to not have been intentional. Actually, I just learned of this not too long ago. Usually, when an explosion occurs on my computer, all you manage to see is a brief flash because the pixel animation pretty much zips by. But on one instance, the game briefly slowed down when a grenade went off, leaving me saying "whoa--what the?"
Paladin
Yup, I agree with the artistic expression... Tehn again, you'll see it far more clearly with a blaster bomb
The Master Maniac
I'm deathly afraid of blaster bomb launchers now. Every time I try to use one, I wind up wasting my own men in some incredible fashion. I think it's best for someone as impatient as myself to keep a fair distance from high explosives. Paladin
Geez, it's my favorite weapon!! ::I'd use it all teh time if it were'nt for the expensive amno! But I always use 2 or 5 when I'm on a battleship/base assault, because I know there's some amno lying around... you just have to be carefull about your waypoints is all, and when in doubt, SAVE... The Master Maniac
Ah, unfortunately I'm one of those guys that's just too arrogant to save in-mission. Okay, either that or I'm too afraid to do so (everything likes to go fubar in a battlescape save, usually). So there's no instant resuscitation should Sgt. Schlappy wind up smacking a tree in front of his face. Quite funny, anyway. Er, once you look past the fact that you have to hire green rookies as replacements... Snakeman
I save in battlescape simply cause I take too long with my missions to come back to it later. If I've been especially good with the MC'ing during my missions as an example. I try to be sure to get out with the important dudes and only smoke the soldiers. Paladin
Oh, I always save once or twice aturn, it turned out as a reflex for me...Of course, it takes only a second, while on my antique 486, it took litterally 10 times as long, so THEN it was a nuisance... Now I can't stop saving since it takes so little time (oh and I ALWAYS save when launching blaster bombs, it's too damn frustrating to miss because of a bug...) Paladin
Yep, as I said, it'S a feature, not a bug, so it must be for artistic expression since it's far too clear to be random... The Master Maniac
Honestly? No. Theologically? Er--edited for fear of being deemed "unpatriotic" and featured on Oprah. Uh, back on topic... Hmm, explosions, explosions. Did I mention that I literally blew up my microwave once? I didn't see a laughing skull appear out of the chaos, but it was close... Anyways, can anybody else spot any other weird "easter eggs" like this? I'm sure that there's at least more than one... Paladin
Yeah *sigh* patriotism... the kind of fanaticism that's called "Patriotic" by one, yet "Terrorist" by the other... Some people somehow don't choke on their own contradictions... Er... Re: explosions, I'm sure there is, but this one goes with the kind of drawing there is in this game... The Master Maniac
Yeah, but it obviously looks deliberate. I mean, don't you think so? But I refuse to get into that game of patriotism vs. accountability. No, I won't do it. I could go on for hours. ::

The Master Maniac
Wait--the motion tracker, the minimap, all of them have skull insignias, too. Weird, huh? I guess the logic was "skulls = cool" or something...
hellfire__356
dont forget the commander insignia for x-com operative rank is a skull in the same shape too so obviously the designer had a thing for skulls :x1commander:
The Master Maniac
I guess it was a Doom-era thing or something. Apparently, the fad hadn't died down by the third installment, as the Commander insignia returns with a slightly less artistic flair. Guess there could have been some kind of philsophical significence in throwing a skull design at everything... I've noticed, though, that the X-Com games are absolutely full of little easter eggs like that. Like I've mentioned in the X-Com 3 forum, you'll sometimes find a hand grenade stuffed in the luggage department in Transtellar (think intergalatic airlines). Just little things the designers wanted to have a little chuckle about, I guess.

The Master Maniac
No kidding. You just have to have a thing for...skulls. It's an art thing. Take Max Payne's obsession with snow and rain, or Doom 3's shadows. Just a graphical "hook," if you will.

hellfire__356
maybe the skulls are just the symbol for death which u usuall get when u set of granades or high explosives
The Master Maniac
Hmm, and apparently the resultant explosion reflects that. I was thinking more of it being an artistic nod in the direction of skulls representing humanity as a whole. Bleh, don't ask how I came to that. Merely a wandering thought. Perhaps just a simple, pedestrian gimmick, I guess. But hey, it really does add to the game somewhat. Every game should have a kind of motif to it, if you will. Makes the experience that much more memorable.

Hoser
I thought the skull dealy was a 'Human' thing, Human skull=humanAdd that to the fact that they're soldiers, and skulls would be the best choice. I noticed the explosion, though, and I think it made it cool.
