Game Stops On Random Missions

I have been playing tftd for a long time now and just changed computers. Now when I install the game everything works fine until about one or two missions into the game. The disk i had was scrathed up so i bought a new disk thinking that would help but it has not. I still have the same problem.

Starting the game everything works fine music, sound, speed is a little fast but not unbearable. But after about two or three missions, the game seems to stop and return to windows xp. With this message "NTVDM CPU has encountered illegal instruction CS: 0000 IP: 0077 OP:FO 37 08 10 02 Choose close to terminate application". after that it closes the game and i lose all the progress that i havent saved then when going back to the same mission it happens again. It seems that it happens in certain times

1. moving my men

2. alien movement

3. in between turns

i am running the origianal cd version of tftd not the CE and am running it on xp is there anyway to stop this from happening this is very frustrating.

Random crashes always happen. It's very hard to tell what's causing them or how to avoid them. It could just be that the savegame you're playing is corrupted, or the game is in an unstable state (which can be caused by any number of hardware and software combinations, it's ridiculous!).

What I suggest is that you make a separate save in the Geoscape before you enter the mission. This way any problems that cannot be solved in the battlescape can be avoided by reloading a prior game. Also get into the habit of saving in the Geoscape at frequent intervals (i.e. the next time a mission appears that you'll be sending troops to).

Rebooting your computer or restarting the game from time to time can help avoid some of the more persistent crashes.

One other thing, are you running the game in an emulator? If you aren't, then you may want to consider running it under Dosbox - See: http://www.xcomufo.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=2990

It seems to be able to help a lot of players with their random crashes caused by hardware conflicts - as it basically allows you to dumb down your current hardware to suit the games needs.
