In EU, the guys move very smoothly, but in TFTD, the agents' footsteps are in an irregular pattern, and sometimes they slow down and might even stop entirely, so I have to press Alt-Enter to shrink the game, then press it again to switch back to fullscreen. [NKF] Posted November 6, 2007 Report Share Posted November 6, 2007 This isn't really much of an answer, but TFTD has more baggage attached to it - in a manner of speaking. The game was well before process threading, but it's probably facing something along the lines of trying to process information faster than it can animate it, resulting it having to wait for itself to catch up and stuffing itself up in the process. It even has a much higher sampling rate for its sounds - but I don't think that would affect the animation speeds on modern computers. It certainly did on older computers though - which is why TFTD's minimum specs are higher than UFO's. In short though, UFO had less to worry about, so it was just that tiny bit more efficient. - NKF Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
feliciafan89 Posted November 7, 2007 Author Report Share Posted November 7, 2007 I know it had higher minimum specs, but why'd they have to zoom out of the game into windows with a black dos box, then you wait for it to switch over to battlescape mode? Whatever. The "baggage" attached to it obviously means it needs better specs from your computer. I'm gambling that TFTD was supposed to keep both the Stategy genre and the XCom series alive. It does some processing in between that causes it to display a minimised console window when it switches between geoscape.exe and tactical.exe. I'm not dissing TFTD or XC3, I'm dissing my crap computer. If you're going to fire it up on MY older computer, grab a beer and be patient. I'm saying older computer because I have a newer one that has Windows 2000, but needs DosBox to run dos games. Otherwise, the computer gives you the middle finger. And even when I run DosBox, it's a nightmare figuring out what exact speed to set it at so it's not running so slow. Even at the right speed, Apocalypse and TFTD (pfft, ANY game) takes forever to move along between levels, rooms, etcetera. More on this in another topic in the off-topic forum. I remember back when we tried to fire up UFO and Ultima Underworld 2 on a really stripped down 386 with 2 megs of memory and I think a 20 meg hard drive - our best PC in the computer club. No operating system - had to supply your own disks for that. Depressingly slow, but the fact it played was the most suprising.
