If you just can't start xcom on your PC with any patches available (numerous loaders, XcomUtil, Extender e.t.c.), consider using a virtual machine!
I just made it to work awesome using VMWare Workstation 7 (30-days trial can be downloaded from vmware.com), created a virtual machine with a clean XP install (it is absolutely easy: vmware will make it by itself, automatically, when you create a machine. You only need to enter a cd-key and point it to a distribution CD or downloaded .ISO).
There, on a vmware clean XP install, everything just works:) The best playset IMHO:
Xcom1 CE (Gold)
+ Sed76' Ufo Extender (http://www.ufopaedia...itle=User:Seb76)
+ you'll also need Microsoft VC2008 Runtime to run Extender
+ download music from http://www.xcomufo.com/x1music.html into "UFO Defense\MP3"
+ Set up Extender:
Other settings - on your tastes.
+ In my case (Core2Duo 2.4, low-end Nvidia discrete graphics, 1680x1050 native LCD res) the game run rather slow until i decreased guest OS (VMWare) resolution to 1024x768.
That's all - no black screen on startup, very pleasant upscaling graphics postfilter, no crashes, no speed problems, no mouse problems, no stucked music on tactical phase + other pleasant mods
Ultimate solution for running XcomCE on XP, Vista, Win7
