How soon was your fastest victory? Halfway 1999 or almost 2001?

For me, D-day depends on what research I want to have done. My fastest ever was early november. (please don't laugh)

Mine was either June or July... I don't remember, so I put the later one, this is only using lasers, and capturing enough crap / aliens to only be able to research just to get to mars, I let a terror mission occure, and stunned the alien leader (sectoid), after many attempts.... :( (Only "cheat" I used was loading a few times on that mission untill I got it to where I was somewhat happy)

April but it requires a lot of luck (nabbing the commander). And a bit of cheating, saving just before cydonia, and keep trying and retrying.

You can only research what is absolutely nessessary to get you to the cydonia mission. You have to buy LOTS of scientists then ditch them when you have everything. You basically keep your first base. You lose countries. The world stays disapointed in your effort BUT NOT ENOUGH DISAPPOINTED.

April/May, i put the latter; I got lucky usually at the start of the game there is already a UFO landed somewhere on the planet. Turns out it was right by my base, i equipped the skyranger and sent off the boys...not realizing it was sectoids in a terror ship....nice thing was I got mind control in January and had 2 psilabs built by the end of Feb...you don't need weapons (or armor....) when you can use your mind. I went straight for the avenger and beat the game with a crew of mind-control masters (i think they still had rifles....)

Yeah I had a friend lose that fast once....

His first and only base got raided on like the 28th of the first month of the game....

The really sad part is he held his own. Through pure good tactics he managed to kill all of the sectoids that had raided him while only losing about half his men...... but the mission did not end.

He slowly advanced from his defended position down into the hangers where, in a corner was hiding.... a cyberdisk!

The cyberdisk proceeded to totally wipe out his remaining soldiers.... he just did not have anything that could put a scratch in it...

It was so sad...

Oh yes he did. A high explosive grenade thrown under a cyberdisk will make short work of it. If you check my game notes my "starting" base defense equipment schedule includes, as I recall, 6 high-explosives for just that purpose.

I thing that lenght of game depends on difficulty level. My friend plays diffculty level Superhuman without using loading. So if he loose craft it's live. Game goes on. I thing with lots of loading you can do almoast everythig (I have defend my base with 5 rookies with rifles - but I have used lots of loads  )

So how long lasts your game on Superhuman without using loading?

Well, your friend that got attacked on the first month must have been on a pretty high difficulty, I never had any problems with them until about March, which I think was about when they were sending scouts. It's actually pretty simple, just shoot down all the scouts. If I manage to shoot all the scouts, by the time they find my base, I've got my defenses up and running. I've only had one alien attack get through my defenses, which I'm assuming was pretty weak considering my defenses probably weakened them.

I had once my main base attacked in January 1999, even before assaulting my first UFO. Of course, my rookies were completely crushed by the attack. I started another game, same thing. Oh, and both game were in beginner mode...

I guess this was a very bad day, but it's definitely possible to be attacked right at the beginning even in beginner mode.

I dont normally get attacked until several months after the start on beginner. In fact, i never get attacked as I get to the point where I shoot down the scout AND the battleships before they get a chance. You must have had a really REALLY bad day.

Perhaps you forgot to take down the "XCOM - coming soon to a secret military base near you!" sign outside the access lift? :D

Yeah, usually I'm not attacked so early, but this time... Well, it was surprising!

About the sign, this reminds me a (french) comic named "XIII", where the hero is a sort of amnesic marine. At one point, he's brought into the american secret base SHH1, and just in front of the entry portal, you can see a big sign "Welcome to SHH1!"...

*Cough* France does not equal Belgium... The author (Jean Van Hamme) and the guy who draws it (William Vance) both are from Belgium, not France

Sorry Rwn, had to get this out.

I do remember that one too, I found it to be 'strange' at least, a HUGE billboard saying "welcome to our secret base (please do not spread this location around, it's supposed to be TOP secret)"

In another comic there was also something like this, the president visiting a new, top secret base under the watchful eye of the press  That was in Le Chant des Stryges (The Song of the Vampires), and THAT is a French comic :D

But let's stay on topic, shall we? Personally I have NEVER been attacked at my base until after a few months, and I have started several games in both UFO and TFTD (maybe I'm just too good, those alien scouts didn't even have a chance to relay my base locations ^_^ ), but they do know to pick their moments. You're just off with your Skyranger and your best soldiers to a crash site and then, suddenly, there they are, attacking your base!!

And I never go for the fastest way, I like the aliens to suffer... as long as possible :devillaugh:

Of course, all good comics are from Belgium ^_^ But I meant it's written in french...

By the way, I have a question, is it possible to get a base with no ships attacked(this never happened to me)? If so, how do aliens detect the base?

Link to comment

The aliens can attack any base, as long as they can find it. The scout ships come out on mission to look for the base, and then later a battleship comes to attack it. If you shoot all the scouts down then they cant find the base.

A mind shield will help protect a base from the scouts, and defenses and a grav shield will protect it from battleships. After that, its up to the soldiers.

Of course, all good comics are from Belgium  ^_^

Well, they're not :( Not all good comics are from Belgium, not every Belgian comic is good... (but it's pretty close  )

As for defences, I believe there's another thread here, where Stewart mentioned how many Fusion Ball Launchers you need so they wouldn't be able to attack you (I believe to be 99% sure you had to have 5 (five) launchers and a grav shield...)

But you wouldn't want that, because if their assault ships are destroyed (so you're base is not being attacked) they will keep sending battleships over, over and over and over...

My earliest game was august 1999. I started a new game on superhuman and i think that i can make it by june. Problem is, I don't want to attack cydonia before i research psionics. I don't really need psi skill but i do need to know the psi strength of my soldiers as i've made it a rule not to use soldiers with less than 70 psi strength in missions involving psi attacks by the aliens. I just HATE having my best soldier suddenly walk out on me and start shooting his colleagues.

I agree, let 'em come. ^_^

I have never tried how fast I can play the game through. Things that makes me play longer than most people are the facts that I don't cheat by reloading and I always play as superhuman. Of course if I play as beginner and reload after every human death and reload as many times as I need to get ethereal leader/commander for martian solution, I think I would manage to win in March-may

could have finished it already, and it is december. But i have yet to finally get a psi. I got ultimate craft and hyperwave decoder, as well as cydonia or bust, by March. All because of floater. They are too easy.

I hope you have hyperwave decoders. Those don't miss a single ship.

Also, if you repeatedly beat the aliens to submission, they lose alot of agression. If you decimate the one or two UFOs the aliens send, they'll only send one or two more. If you let them free for a little bit, you can have a whole armada in a month! :)

It's like farming your own alien invasion. Don't kill the seeds, let them grow. ^_^

I managed to engage the enemy at Cydonia as early as January 5, 2000.

Envy me, the Avenger landed RIGHT NEXT TO THE ELEVATOR.

:devillaugh:

In spite of the blaster-bug, I was still able to blaster-bomb the alien brain without being on the same level. Difficulty level was Experienced.

I have vague memories of nailing them as early as August, but that was too long ago.

My last two games have been on Superhuman without reloading and I defeated them by June and July respectively. Thats without PSI training in either game. Basically its just a matter of getting to research the Avenger and then building it before you go.

Also concentrate on capturing the relevant Aliens to research especially a Sectiod Navigator, A leader and then a Commander which I usaully get from a battleship as don't tend to get any bases being built.

Never seem to be able to capture a sectiod leader live. Have wasted many men at the end of terror missions trying to nab one.

one time i built a secondary psi training base in the south pole, but i got massacred because I wasn't prepared for that. by then, I only had 2 psi labs and enough rookies to max my training schedule, but no general stores :Brickwall: I just gave the base up, because I had no guns at all (you would think that maybe some of em would keep a pistol for personal use, but noooo..)

Just finished the game again. Didn't research any weapons until like May because I kept getting live aliens and thought it would be more interesting to research those. Then November I assaulted 2 alien bases (by this time I was armed with mostly laser rifles, with some heavy plasma, with only 2 armoured units), and accidentally caught an alien commander and 2 alien leaders. I began researching them, and I just began studying "Cydonia or Bust" when all these countries stopped paying me because I only had 1 avenger, and I had no more fuel left for it, no Skyrangers, 2 interceptors armed with 1 plasma beam each, so I couldn't catch 99% of the UFOs. I was really giving up. Just kept hitting cancel as UFOs popped up. Then my scientists finished research on Cydonia, so for fun I thought I'd just do that mission, using the last bit of my fuel and mostly unarmoured soldiers. Guess what, I won... on December 1st.

I hadn't even encountered the etherals before Cydonia, so I was kinda surprised when most of my guys started slaughtering themselves, but I got to the control room with one of the last soldiers, tossed a grenade at the pulsing brain and won! And throughout the game the biggest UFO I destroed was a Large UFO (since I couldn't catch up with anything else), and also surprisingly the aliens didn't attack my base. On to TftD...

i started a new game , blew up a bunch of ships , sent a group of men to take on some aliens , and then the buggers went and killed my base while all my good men were away. i hadnt even managed to get plasma cannons yet

*tests his memory*

My shortest game lasted to the start on November. I was easily able to get a commander from the higher alien ships *ie: battleship etc* and was lucky to obtain a alien commander from an alien base I raided *a snakeman one*

However so soon did I get research on avenger and on cydonia that I didn't really meet the etherdals till I got the shrine where the brain was kept. Through SHEER LUCK! *I was getting slaughtered in the second half, I lost nearly all 20, about four was left* mainly due to the mind control by the etherdals I was getting butchered. *I only had heavy plasma rifle and bodyarmour not powersuit.*

YET it was because of the mind control that I won!!!

OMFG

You see I had two characters who entered the chamber, I killed one of the etherdals and just ran out of TU's to take out the brain. The second character behind mine also ran out of TU's when he arrived. Yet one of the etherdals Mind Controlled the second guy and shot my character in front with auto shot. The guy died on the first shot, yet the two shots strayed ahead passed the corpse and...hitting the brain that was standing in front of the character and the game ended with victory.

So in short it was the very weapon used for my demise that proved to be their undoing!

Taste thy Irony you fools!! ^_^

July 14th, I think. I actually attempted this just after reading this thread. Usually I'm a "perfectionist" (At least in XCOM), going to cydonia in early/mid 2001, with 26 ubertroopers armed with the very best.

Still, in the July game I barely got to research blaster bombs before setting off. I was lucky enough to get psi relatively early, and through extensive panic-everything-that-moves training, I managed to have 3 psi-capable soldiers before setting off. About half my guys still had personal armor, and some were still using laser rifles (no clip useage makes room for flares used on the surface of mars)

I always enjoyed researching every piece of information in the UfoPaedia before I finished the game, so I basically haven't finished until after year 2000; but you never know when I may attempt to destroy the master brain early sometime in the near future. ;)

I'm with Kratos. I love "Perfecting" the war effort on earth before taking off.

However, I discovered it ISN'T possible to complete the UFOpedia without cheating. How, you ask? Is it that you can't capture sectopods and cyberdiscs alive? No, not that.

There is an "Alien Reproduction" entry that needs research of an object no longer found in alien bases. The entry is still coded in (Much like melee attacks for guns), but can only be unlocked if you happen to secure an "Alien Reproduction". This can only be done through some nifty save-game editing.

I just had my fastest game ever (first one Veteran level). Aliens invaded my only base on Jan 12th. I was low on men after finding a landed UFO.

We only had 4 proximity grenades. 4 AC's 1 Missile launcher and rifles. A blaster bomb took out the missile launcher ammo pile. Once the prox grenades ran out we were unable to take out the cyberdisc.
