noabbitnofun
What can they do on top of what they already do?
noabbitnofun
BUGS? (I know programmers will read this differently but...) What about Alien missions to sacrifice a few units just to get into you base and release bugs. I mean, anything that can spread in your base to decoy the buildings, kill people, slow your research or anything.Ex: They have a wonderfull chemical formula with which first you have only bad scent (still slowing recovery, research, production) that makes your employess leave you if it stays too long.Ex2: They release buggy buggers that hatch and replicate, then try to kill your guys. (A little mission to clean them out in your own base?) You might have to research a bit to find the counter measure... Unless the aliens take you out before, that is.Regarding the way this "contamination" comes in, it could be direct Alien attack to your base, but also (why not?) Alien manipulation of one of your members, or they could release this stuff in the whole country (they don't have to care, do they?) It could be also be coming from a government / Nation that does not like you (for any reason of theirs). Of course it would be nice not to have too much of this - to keep the focus on killing the aliens themselves. Any thoughts? Yan
Durandal
Actually, I think that the only thing that is really bad about base defense is that it's too easy to build a base with the hangars and lifts to one side and give the aliens only one route to get to you. The Aliens should be able to dig or blast other ways in after a few turns. And there should be more of them. Why they would attack with only a dozen and a half troops, see them all die, and come back with a similar number is way beyond me. I could see the first attempt being a rout, but after that they should be able to blast a hole into another part of your base. That would sure surprise people who are used to clustering their troops around the only route in.
sir_schwick
I think the aliens should keep escalating Base Raids until they work. If one battleship is not enough, send two. If two is no good, three. Imagine whenever twenty BS attack, 10 get through and you have to face 100+ Mutons,Ethereals,Sectopods,Cyberdisks,Chryssalids. Adun_Toridas
Yes, and with so much movement, we will soon have the american task force repeling (200000 vs 200) the alien attack with Xcom guys.
GARAK
If that many BSs are in one area, just nuke em. It's worth the penalty of people wondering why a nuke went off in northern siberia, or central US. 20 BSs at one time is quite a prize, and best of all, the xcorp base is underground and would probably survive. Dover
What else should they do? I'm partial to the idea of making all base assualt missions (Whether it's you attacking or the aliens attacking) 2 part missions, and maybe the Cydonia mission can be 3 parts, just to make it harder. In the first part, you'll send out some of your more expandable rookies to fight with the aliens outside the base (After all, it is where the BattleShip landed...). If they all get killed off or retreat, you move on to phase 2, which is just the same as the base defense missions we now all know and love. If they sucessed, you repel the attack AND you get all the booty in the BattleShip. Of course it'd be harder to fight outside than in since you don't get the nice little choke points... [Blehm 98]
I believe all bases, including cydonia, should be 2 leveled. You land, fight off the reaction teams, and then get down. Staying on top will get you killed, so there should be numerous entry points into the base, but a massive number of aliens on top, so that you have to get down before they are all outside your skyranger or you are dead. That would add some urgency, and make you want to finish fast
sir_schwick
Why not just combine the two phases into one massive base phase with a large map? That way there is no 'artificial' feel to, 'oh well, they reached this quanitty on a computer model'. Instead if you want to retreat after BSes start landing, you just do. If you wnat to duke it out on top and risk most there with a small garrison insdie, you do. If you start winning really well and pushing them back, then its possible to get into there ships and disable them. It is more open ended this way, one of the real neat things about the original. Dover
I think I kinda get what you're saying, sir schwick. Basically instead of it having to be two seperate levels, just incorperate both into one? That would probably mean making the map much larger vertically (Maybe twice the size, to accomidate both below and above ground operations), but that would be useful anyways for any potention skyskraper missions and stuff. I always found it a little depressing that the flying suit's flying ability is damn near worthless on base defense missions. If we incorperate an inside AND an outside... [Blehm 98]
yeah, but then you get a map that is a lot bigger, because the base probably pretty far underground, and a base map twice as big is very difficult
Dover
Not twice as big, just with a long elevator shaft. Maybe 2-3 levels of access-lift to the surface, with the regular 4 surface levels. It wouldn't be any harder than a two-part Cydonia-esque mission. sir_schwick
Or it could be mostly acess shaft ot eh underground, unless the aliens blasted the hangar exist tunnels. Think the Type B UFOs from Apocalypse.
Dover
Ugh.... I never played Apoc. I've only played UFO out of a PC Gamer CD thing and I "aquired" TFTD from the internet... Edited February 20, 2006 by Dover
