X-com 3 Aar Site For My Current Game With My Coworkers

Recommended Posts

Hmm... general or Saved Games and Missions... well, this is about AARs, so...

Justice's X-Com AAR Page

I've been playing X-Com: Apocalypse using my coworkers as agents since late 2007 or so, writing short AARs with video clips and screenshots and sharing them out as a mini-website on one of my workstations in the office. I'm still doing that, but (after asking them for permission) I decided to get a web host and make it available from outside the office. I'm no web designer, so my website is VERY basic html and some of the mission list pages have a few too many 30kB-100kB images to be very dialup friendly, but I've broken it up a little bit to mitigate that and it's at least navigable.

I'm not a writer either, but I guess I'm good enough that they keep reading. I've been updating it frequently again lately, and over time there's turned out to be quite a bit of content. I mirror the in-game apocpaedia, showing only the entries shown with my current research. I have a mission reports section with 47 ground mission AARs with varying amounts of description, screenshots, and video clips. Next is the Personnel Reports (which I need to make easier to navigate), that has autogenerated inventory images showing the characters' current loadouts, notes about some of them, an autogenerated stats table with their starting and current stats, and, of course, an autogenerated kill list. I used to have a section that totaled up my inventory of everything carried or in my base, but I never got around to automating that and got tired of updating it, so now it just generally describes my equipment status. After that is the vehicles page, describing the fleet, and finally facilities, describing my bases.

If anyone wants to take a look, feel free. I imagine the videos will be done uploading in an hour or so; everything else should be working. If anything is broken it's probably because I mis-capitalized something somewhere; mostly I've been doing the X-Com 3 stuff in Windows since libavcodec-based transcoding apps can't handle dosbox's zmbv implementation very well, and by compressing the audio in the movies without touching the video stream I can cut the file size 30-50%.

nice mission log. It's nice to see people still play xcom.

I'm currently mapping static levels in xcom 2, long and tedious job. I had some trouble mapping the first level of the alien colony. I'm mapping the second level of the cargo ship. Floors 0,1 and 2 are done. Will map floor 3 tomorrow. Then fix the issue with the alien colony. I've already mapped both levels of the passenger ship, all floors. Just a fun little hobby, lets you see the entire map in one picture.

Whew, having shields let me confident enough about the durability of my Hovercars to field a couple of them with Lineage Plasma Cannons. I didn't want to put such a huge chunk of money on something as fragile as unshielded hovercars. Gave me enough firepower to finally knock one of those annoying super-armored bombers down. Wasn't really expecting Micronoids there (I don't remember what all aliens show up in which craft), but I was sure glad that I brought the stun grapples as a precaution, even if my poor 'bots had to chase those Micronoids through the UFO and out the back underneath a half dozen Skeletoids to stun them.

It's almost a shame things are going so well. Big difference from before I had shields, the aliens were running all over the city with devastator cannons and entropy launchers and everyone was nearly dead all the time. Oh well, the next mission should bring my tactical score up to 18k, it's nearly the end of the week, and I don't have disruptor armor yet, so I'm sure the aliens will find some way to break my easy-win streak with dimension missiles next week.

Coming up steadily towards the endgame. 73 mission reports so far (not counting base defense, which I generally have video for but not an actual report). The last couple were just 2-man CoS raids to try out cloaking and disruptor suits in a safe (i.e., non-entropy) environment. Just quick summaries rather than full reports. Disruptor armor works even better than I remembered; the second mission I did swords-only. Still haven't seen a Psimorph =p . Researching annihilators, building a retaliator, trying to get my horde of agents equipped. Just passed 28000 tactical score, hoping to see teleporters soon, since I haven't had a chance to play with those yet. I've got my savegame parser correctly calculating medals now, so those are on the player profiles, and all of the equipment I have access to is handled by the program I wrote to build those inventory images (seen here).

And wow, is there ever a lot of UFOs in the alien dimension on superhuman. I need more engineers to show up so I can get more ships and shields built.

Here's a couple of recent highlights:

Capturing the first and only battleship we've managed to shoot down, and taking a megaspawn alive:

Mission 67: Battling a Battleship

Deployed very close to the doors of this destroyer, rushed straight in:

Mission 68: Taking the Direct Approach

I guess if you like seeing Cult of Sirius guards being completely, totally, utterly useless, the CoS raid videos (missions 72 and 73) are kinda neat.

Heh, here's a couple of polar opposite UFO assaults.

A nice, clean mission. Lost no shields, nothing exploded anywhere. Anything with a dimension launcher was mind controlled to prevent it. Still entered into

the UFO to fight most of the aliens.

Mission 79: Clean Assault

And then we have this mission. Bum rushed the UFO with my missile squad, pounding everything with dimension missiles or incendiaries. Spent way too long searching for aliens inside the UFO; eventually followed a motion sensor signal down a hole I knocked in the floor earlier. Had an anthropod 'blink' to dodge a burst of devastator cannon fire from a squad.

Mission 80: Dirty Destruction

Had a mothership show up and finally got that Psimorph. Managed to knock down it's type-8 escort, too. My first Retaliator finished less than an hour after the mothership showed up :cussing:

Also, city bankrupt. By a lot. No more funding for me.
