UFO.

Because it feels more polished and better balanced. I like the theme of TFTD, but there seems to be a few things out of whack in the game. Also they should've never had cruise ship mission in TFTD. They're more of mission where you have anything but fun playing. Nothing more than a mission to irritate you.

UFO, would be TFTD if they kept the land missions in it.  I like that TFTD is harder and it has better terror zones too.

There are a lot things in TFTD which are corrections of UFO (though limiting Autocannons and Rocket Launchers was gay) but I really did not like the graphics of TFTD. They ALL are inferior to UFO in my opinion. Of course later games have much better graphics.

Well the cruise ship missions start out as fun but they are just too hard.  I think if done right they would be cool.

Yeah I agree.

What really put me out with the cruise ship missions was the all to common scenario of aliens with insane reaction camped at every bulkhead, and the brain in a jar in a small saucer- that I can't remember the name of-that blows up when it dies- alien being camped in a position that's pure insanity to try to root out. Add to that the buggy field of view coding and it's a recipe for too much frustration. By the time you make it to second part of those missions you're so low on supplies, men, and not to mention haviing any enthusiasm worn down, that you just don't even want to bother to drag it on any longer.

Those cruise ship missions, in the state they are, were a big mistake to include.

Now if they would've gone a little lighter on the aliens, meaning perhaps using the easier species, those missions would've been fun. As they stands they're just not worth hassle and ruin it for me.

I still like TFTD overall regardless though. I just feel that some things needed some work about it.

It's like make it so I can't rely on auto much. Ok, fine that's fair enough. Make it so I can't use certain weapons on land. That's ok too and makes it somewhere interesting. Bring the addition of cruise ship missions that just seem to drag on and on and whittle away my enthusiam. That's taking the difficulty thing a bit too far. At least be a little fair about it. I mean if they going to make a mission that sadistic to the player, there should be tremendous rewards for finishing them through. And I mean huge rewards. Like making it the equivilent of successfully completing 10 terror missions or something.

Too much punishment and not enough reward. I don't blame Mythos for that, but more of the bean counters that probably forced them to release it before they had polished it like they probably wanted. I wouldn't be surprised it if was something like the following:

BC(bean counter): We need you guys to hurry up and finish the xcom2 project pronto!!! times a wasting!!!

Mythos: But we still have a bunch of loose ends to tie up..

BC: Well you better decide which is more important. Getting it done right away, or just pulling the plug on it altogether!

Mythos: But we've invested so much time into and it needs a few final touches. There's a couple of things that need some balancing. Like our cruise ship missions... We need to work out the balancing kinks in it.. And considering we've got a loyal fanbase and have some huge expectations from our fans to try to top our first game, wouldn't it be better to take the time to get it just right?

BC: NO! Tell you what.. It better be ready to go gold by thursday or you can just forget about there being an Xcom 2 at all!!!!

Mythos: but...

BC: NO BUTS! It's now or never. Butts are like excuses and excuses are like ill mannered persons. Everyone's got one. I don't want to hear any excuses! I'm tired of everyone giving excuses. I wanna see some results!

Mythos: Uhmm... OK, but don't say I didn't warn you that the sequal to UFO is going to bomb.... Results.. Well, if you like you can come down here and play the game so you can see what we mean...

BC: Play the game??!! Are you kidding me? How old do you think I am? Do I sound like a child? Do I look like a child? Do I act like a child?

Mythos: Well... to be honest..... erm... nevermind.

BC: Nevermind??!! Anyway, I look forward to the project being finished by thursday (CLICK!!!!...)

You have to clean up the declipping bug before that would have any meaning.

I hear ya.

Though I never bother declipping. It's like how I don't use the scientist trick (free monthly cost trick). I feel like it's an exploit and I'd feel like any accomplishments in the game wouldn't be as earned.

Not that I have anything against people who cheat at xcom. I don't have anything against anyone who cheats at singleplayer games (just have issue with cheaters in multiplayer games, but that's an entirely different discussion altogether.). I feel it's up to everyone to figure out what they feel is ok in their book. Afterall, cheats are there for when a possible player might get frustrated to the point they'd give up on a game (well, and also to screw around with). Ideally, of course, those said players, would only use them as a last resort in as much of moderation as possible so that they still can get from the game all the rewarding experiences it has to offer. But I take no issue with anyone ever cheating in a SINGLE player game, because the bottomline is how much fun they're having and that's really all up to them to figure out.

I guess what I'm trying to say, is that impose upon myself not to allow myself to use those tricks, but I have no judgements about using them. It's like whether to reload mid-battlescape or not. It's really up to the player to decide what they feel is fair for themselves. I mean on one hand there's no load option in the battlescape option screen, and the manual and design of the game seems to imply a player wouldn't do that, on the other hand, they include a save option in the option screen for the battlescape. What's the point of saving mid mission if you're expected not to reload. The bottom-line is I think the developers left it up to the individual player to decide what they feel is best. It seems like they didn't want to impose hard limits for when you can save and load like console games tend to do. Somewhere along the way the standard for PC games became it's all up to the player how to handle saving and loading. It's also become an expectation to allow in any PC game since.

In my opinion forcing the player when he can and can't load or save is the stupidest thing ever. Only recently have some console game developers grabbed a clue about that. While when you're a kid and don't have a busy schedule you can tolerate it, as an adult it seems rather ridiculous when you consider what priority entertainment should have. It's like, I gotta be somewhere, then I'm going to save righ then and there, if a game is designed not to allow that, then why bother playing, especially if it's a very long game.

Ears right back at you.

I'd don't use the transfer trick either. But the declipping one I do because if you don't then the game cheats by deleting unused ones. I don't want to keep tract of individual bullets and since there is no happy medium here my choice is I cheat or the game cheats, I pick me.

I think in X-Com it works though.  IF ya don't have a gun for everybody then the people in the back of the ranger just pick up the dead guy's guns.

Really what else can you do?

:P just an experience all X-Com players should go through at least once. Winning a battle when you don't have all the supplies can be rewarding.

I hear ya there. It is pretty lame that the game cheats you out of clips. So clips are being robbed by a bug. I don't blame you for using declipping. Afterall, nobody can very well expect anyone not to use that exploit as long as that bug persists.

Not to debate you about the ramifications of the declipping exploit because I totally agree, but just as side note of something that this made me think of, I could swear that the version I play, that bug is gone. I'm playing the Dos verison 1.4 I think (or whatever was the last version they ever made for the dos version). At first I didn't believe it, even now I still think I'm imagining things, because almost everything I've read having to deal with xcom in regards to version 1.4 (reviews, USG, etc etc.) seem to indicate that particular bug was never fixed.

Maybe it's my imagination though, because I just don't usually pay that close of attention, it's just that there's been times where it would've been real obvious and hard to miss if it was hosing me on clips. Like when I no more left in reserve back at base.

Can anyone confirm if my hunch is off or not?

I notice though, that in TFTD 2.0, the bug is still there. Then again TFTD seems more buggy overall compared to fully patch version of xcom1, which is pretty interesting since it's a much later game based upon much of the same coding. It does still make sense though, because afterall, all the changes are bound to bring about new bugs that are a whole different ballgame. It's just that it's interesting and makes me think of other games, where sometimes with patches you'd see a bug fixed, but a later patch would bring a bug or two back while fixing others.

I just mention all of that because I'm curious if anyone else has had the same recollection of that version of xcom1 possibly being free of that annoying bug?

Similarly, you can grab stuff from the bugs. If you are close to the 80 item limit, just don't bring the extra clips, take them from the field.

It could be that the TFTD developement stream came out of an earlier version of UFO, and that after the split, there was still repeair work going on for UFO.

As for finding out have each of your soldiers carry a different weapon load and bug-out (dust-off) see what happens. I'm pretty sure the rockets do get eatten. Then try again, save it, use Xcomutil and subdue the aliens then hit next turn and see what happens.

Yes, in the skyranger. When you get to the field though you can grab extra clips there, you don't have to bring them on the skyranger.

:P Then it is not really a bug. ;) I just always figured the X-Com cleanup crew arrived after a mission and to take apart the ufo and move everything back to the base. I guess in our version there should be some time before the X-Com base gets all the supplies left over from a crash site that didn't fit in the ranger going back.

Well we could do that, I suppose. Do we really need to bother though. Besides you could say that before they leave the troops take inventory. The stuff is sold while it still sits in the farmers field. The buyers get the stuff later. That works I think.

well :) in ufo lore the suits comb the place after such a mission. you know the scene where all those FBI and police cards are there and they have guys taking readings and so forth. :) ya seen it on the X-Files and in movies.

Haven't played Apoc yet, so it's UFO Defense for me. A friend mentioned that in Apoc he's got his guys up to the best gear and uses some kind of toxic darts, and the stats on his guys are so high now that he can take out a dozen baddies with 3 guys in about 3 or 4 turns. He's got the best armor and a personal shield on them. Is this the case for anyone else? It would seem overpowered, but I haven't played it yet.

BTW: Don you think this poll is a little unfair? Site is supposed to be centered on X-Com: Ufo Defense and Xenoicide. Results can't be surprising.

I vote here month ago but I haven't time to write why I chose first X-Com.

So I played only Ufo: Enemy Unknnown and I know it's quite different than original X-Com. Unfortuantely Im gonna write this post anyway and you'll have to read this... I loved UFO because it was new. Well, I played it in 1997, but it's only game with so briliant idea. Well there was X-Com 2 too, but Im gona write about it later. UFO had nice graphics (for me it really looked quite good) and nice sounds. (Becauese Im playing in DOS I don't have problem with "TAKA TAKA" sound or something like that). But my favorite were aliens. Alien races from UFO are my favorite ones in all games (StarCraft's Protoss are second). Sectoids, Floaters, Snakemans, Mutons, Ethereals... Every race was interesting and had something special (like terror weapon or ability). Another thing are alien crafts. Every one got some function to do and it's appearing in atmosphere was a warning of coming troubles. X-Com crafts were interesting too, especially finally Avenger:D. I liked UFOpaedia idea. I was mostly reading about alien life forms... UFO: Enemy Unknown is my favorite part of series.

X-Com: Terror From The Deep. I played it as a second :D. But Im quite disappointed. First and most unliked by me thing is story. Theres nothing abiut First Alien War. Only in gauss technology it's mentioned that new technology is using something from Plasma. Oh come one! That's all? One rifle and story's done?! I don't demand any powerfull weapons because I understand that new war is underwater and probably old weapons wouldn't work there but they could made something more about story. Alien Life forms were quite good in X-Com 2 to me, but I liked research results form from the "first part". In Enemy Unknown aliens were laying on laboratory table cut. In X-Com 2 they're showed in some tube somethimes with one cut on stomach... Live aliens were researched in their "natural enviroment" what was quite good idea. For me TFTD was a little too difficult. At begining of 3rd month I downed some Very Small USO. It contained one Lobsterman... This one F***er killed my 4 elite soldiers and died hit by 5 Sonic Pulsers. When I realized that I'll have to fight much of 'em in alien bases or even bigger USOs I quit. A little too much for me. Another messed thing was tech tree. Crap! How it could be so inert?! I need to research one dead alien to be able to research Aqua Plastics... Why, for sake? I would agree if after researching Deep One's corpse I would be able to research Aqua Plastics armor... This tech tree made researching aliens usefull, but for sake, too inert with much of bugs! And Geoscpae... Awful! Some terrible yellow grounds and much of water colours. I know game takes place deep underwater but UFO's Geoscape was beautyfull and TFTD's is terrible...

X-Com Apocalypse... I like it because its something new. Here are coming new aliens from other non discovered yet by humans place. They're just roaming around city like tourists but after two wars with aliens and fighting 'em in galaxy people are probably terrified. It like WWII. It ended nearly 60 years ago but there are still much of movies aobut it. Probably same thing is about both alien wars. After whole stuff about abductions and mutations humans don't wanna risk :). After disapoitment of TFTD I started to play Apoc, and its great! Plasma technology, lasers on crafts, my beloved Elerium (still rare :D), flying suits... There's really big trace of alien wars. And theres a true point of bio-research. In TFTD it was forced into game and made it totaly inert. Here its human way to made biological warfare. Well, Ihave to say that aliens were looking dumb here and their weapons looks terribly awful too but I can accept as explain their other dimensional source. I like Apoc UFOs. They're really looking as famous sacuers :D. In Enemy Unknown only saucer-like-ship was FireStorm or Very Small... In Apoc I like new Real Time option. Its giving X-Com new way of playing, and is quite interesting. Alien Life forms aren't magnificent:(. Autopsies have same dumb style as in TFTD. Popper's autopsy is cutting head and legs off... A little stupid, huh? In Apoc is one really great thing... Independence. Whole Mega-Primus may hate you and you can still stay alive. Manfactruring as funding source, and to transfer goods between bases you can use your cfarts and agents. Unfortunately you're unable to transfer scientists and engineers so before begining of war it's required to have some personel supplies ;P. But in Apoc there was one fending-off-players thing. It's size. "One dumb city". Heh... Well I have to say X-Com 1 rulez, because defending whole planet was best. Not waters of world but cities, continents...

Well, that's all. You can go home now ;).

There's not much of a competition really. Tftd is tougher (which is a good thing) but as has been said before it was on water and it felt like it was ufo with renamed bits. Sorry to the guys that worked hard on it but UFO has the top spot. As for Apoc I really didn't like the artwork, it was like a 1950's artist's view of the future, which is a shame cause didn't they hire some famous graphic artist to do all the gfx in it? The visual style looked as though it was thrown together at the last minute which spoilt it for me and I lost interest after that. I was looking forward to the squad based first person view game (don't remember what it was called) but after it was cancelled I went into the xcom deadzone for a fair few years.
