Fighter Nick Names

Hey

I was thinking, what about individual fighter craft having nicknames? Like it could be Interceptor 12 "Hawk". Sort of like the pilot's name, but 2 help distinguish the craft from one another, instead of just a number.

The pilots would have names for the types of aircraft , but I don't know if they still name the individual fighters themselves. For instance, noone calles the B-1b the Lancer, they all call it the Bone (B-one, clever, no?). I don't know if America still names their craft like the Memphis Belle or the Enola Gay... They were usually named for women, at any rate.

Very true, the names themselves could actually be pilot nicknames, as AFAIK there isn't going 2 be seperate pilots so it could be said that each pilot has their own nickname and their own craft, and that is the nickname u c.

This might bring up an interesting subject...If we put any emphasis on pilots why not give them experience points...they can't fight in Geoscape because they've got to stay alive to get out of there...maybe reinforced anti-plasma cockpit door could do the trick...then the higher experience maybe the better they attack other alien ships or dodge shots from alien ships...to make this even or both aliens and humans give the aliens the same ranking system...maybe have them randomly generated when an alien ship is spotted? Hmmm... that's an interesting idea rev. After all, the kind of interceptor you becomes moot point after you get plasma cannons. An interceptor with plasma cannons (even just 1 plasma cannon) out ranges all ufo's except for the battle ships.

So all the stats about interceptors become hula-baloo because it doesn't matter.

My point... well, maybe we can put a new interception sub routine in v2++++ to actually include such considerations.

So what you're after is callsigns for the pilots?

I don't think any self respecting pilot would have Hawk as a callsign. They're usually things like, 'Gumby,' or 'Moose.' Their colleagues assign them their callsign. I think if someone was called 'Hawk' by their classmates it would be sarcasm meant as an insult.

Maby we should do this in regards to alien experience: The bigger ship, the better the pilot. Also, user's race factors into this too, A Floater battleship will not be as skilled as a etherial battleship.

I can see it now, j'ordos, Shdsflihelrkj 1 come in over!, Shdsflihelrkj 1 please respond!

I am against naming craft, because If we later want to include a actual view of the interceptor shooting down ufos, while includeing a pilots voice Then naming craft wouldn't help that. Sorry if I don't make sense, I am only awake because of caffine. :D Edited by Cpl. Facehugger

I know what u mean, it shouldn't be that hard 2 get voice talent ( if we can find any voice talent with the right setup ) to do a level pilot voice 2 do numbers, but it is impossible with written names.

All I can say is please add in an option to name the interceptors. I hated going to the interception screen and trying to remember whether it was interceptor 7 or firestorm 4 that was the closest. Giving an option to name the aircraft would be a very nice added feature.

How about letting the player see the loadout as well? Particularly in the early stages of the game a player might want to keep interceptors with different loadouts available for different threats (so as not to waste expensive avalanches on small scouts etc.) An in-game way to tell which one's which without having to remember the numbers or going to the base screen before scrambling would help.

Yeah, this is why I'm for naming them as well. Fresh off another game where I'd been doing a lot of interceptions from the interception tab on the Geoscape View, I understand why folks would want craft naming in there. For one thing, using X-COM as an example, it appears that like soldier placement, craft are shown by when they were built/bought in the list.

What further confuses things is their location. I might have had to go through all the interceptors before coming up on the transports and the order might seem weird by virtue of when I got them, then of course remembering by number which one I want.

Anyway, changing the name from the equip craft screen or something would be sweet. As for spotting what they have at a glance, perhaps a space for number of troops / HWPs if any / craft weapon loadout if any / followed by remaining fuel (could swap this out with percent damage if it can't fly yet) with all of it preceded by base locale.

i.e.

Interception List off of Geoscape View...

...........................................o......O........=-....[.F.]
Arctic Base - SKyranger 4 ~ 10 | 1 HWP | n/a | 100%

The little doohickies above each column could be small icons representing what's on it, although depending on the fonts used the icons probably wouldn't fit too well. One for troops, tanks, weapons and fuel and/or damage would be neat, however if a craft were damaged, technically you probably wouldn't be able to select then launch it anyway. But in their case all I'd really want to spot was percent damaged any time I had one in that condition from that view.
