Zanfib32
I've seen a lot of material on where and how to build new bases, but I've can't find anything telling me when I should build new bases. Please help me.
Zombie
It mostly boils down to money. When you have plenty of cash, build another base. A good amount is $2 million extra to start. How do you get more cash? Sell excess equipment, weapons, UFO parts or corpses and keep the funding nations happy. This ties into part two: Alien activity. When the aliens are busy, building another base in the high-activity area will allow you to circumvent any problems that arise. Any activity you do in that area will have a profound impact on the aliens score. By keeping the overall score in your favor, you keep the nations in that area happy. - Zombie
Snakeman
This is one area I'm sure that has helped me with the graphs. If you can determine the country that has the most alien activity going on, it might be a good spot for a base. However, I tend to always place my bases the same ways in any case. Sometimes the order of when I place it changes, but not always where. If money is tight, the best way to go might be to start a new one that's fairly minimal in expenses, like radar bases (a lift, a radar of some type, and maybe a stores and a living quarters - these last two if you want things there to defend them). Bullet-Tooth Tony
Alien activity IMO is not a very good thing to consider when choosing your new base placement.Whatever you build on your new base - it'll useless for a month or so.Alien activity in areas changes from month to month. If you've placed a base somewhere taking into consideration high alien activity there's no guarantee it'll remain the same when you have an HWD and Hangar complete and Interceptor arrived. So I base my outpost placement entirely on my global expansion strategy. Second base is obviously as far from the first one as possible, so I can deal with aliens where I was previously unable to.When I start expansion? Not in first month, in the second - very unlikely. Usually, in March or so - depends on how much money I've earned in January and February. I like to build the second base already with an HWD (I do my best to capture a Navigator ASAP, 3-4 rookie dead for that is acceptable). So I need 1 750 000$ (1 Hangar, 1 HWD, 1 Stores) + area price. Robo Dojo 58
Don't overestimate the cost of a radar base. All it takes is a mil or two, and a few weeks to double your eyes early in the game. The REAL expense comes from staffing and arming it, which can take over $6 million of supplies and base facilities easily. Late in the game you may even find you have over $10 or $15 mil invested in a full base! For the cost of such a single base, you can have 5 more radar bases. (I'll take the radar. ) It is rare for aliens to retaliate on a radar base, as they only search when there is X-COM activity nearby. Therefore, it's best to take your chances, save the cash, and leave the radar base undefended. Due to how bases are excavated, and how important having radar coverage is, it is important to build at least one radar base in the early months. Chances are, your first radar base will become your second full base. It will take several months of construction to have a base fully operational, so don't be hesitant about not having all your funds ready first thing. Just get those bulldozers started and you'll do fine. All aliens take a few hours, spanning at least half of the globe, as they both approach and leave the earth. The more radar coverage you have, the more early warning chances you get.
