If anything I'd suggest more centerpiece style buildings like the hotel!

sometimes I find there's just too much open road space when maps are generated

otherwise i have no other suggestions at this point, you know what you're doing.

It's an excellent city replacement. The roads and road crossings are a bit wide at the moment, I think (maybe I'm just used to fairly wide sidewalks here in the UK :P) but the residential structures seem a bit... unnecessarily complex? They also have that unused ground floor level. It should either have outside access or building access that doesn't involve breaking down the walls. Also needs more cars (make them explosive - but extremely tough) and more 10x10s wouldn't go amiss. Right now maps are either all residential, all storage, or half/half. Perhaps some small convenience stores (10x10 or 20x10/10x20) or other shops (tool shops? computer shops? food shops? coffee shops? book shops? the list is endless) and maybe a few more 20x20s. A great pair of examples are a gas station or a car dealership. :)

Also if the area is abandoned or otherwise having problems with panicking civilians, it really should look a little messier. Right now it seems far too serene, as if the place got neutron bombed. I'm not saying lots of mess, but papers and books on the floor, doors left open, cars stopped in the middle of the streets at odd angles, chairs knocked over... etc. :wink1:

In my opinion this map should have some wide spaces (roads) and some kind of places to hide (buidling) - It means that current version of map is OK for me =b . I've marked more tiles in poll - I would like to see little more cars on street (they can really prevent from hit - but not always). Other extra tiles would be fine, too.

OK, thanks for the feedback so far. I'm gonna address the main topics that came up from the replies:

1. Roads

sometimes I find there's just too much open road space when maps are generated
I don't know really, it's for me almost perfect. Maybe less roads?

I've already made quite a few changes to the road system:

- On 4x4 maps there are no roads, on 5x5 the roads are as simple as in City.

- The sidewalks have been enlarged by reducing the parking spaces.

2. The Hotel

If anything I'd suggest more centerpiece style buildings like the hotel!
I love the map hobbes. personally though i think the hotel should be its own map :P, dawn city is great without it and its just too huge a building to have to search...

I'm still not sure of what to do with the Hotel. I'm not very much inclined right now to add buildings so large because of their size. Perhaps it would be better to reduce its height by 2 levels. On the other hand, having a terrain just for the Hotel (or other similar buildings) might not work very well because it gets repetitive.

3. Tile considerations

(...)but the residential structures seem a bit... unnecessarily complex? They also have that unused ground floor level. First, it definitely needs more tiles, that's the main reason why I still consider it a beta version but my tile design skills are rather limited, so it will have to wait until someone draws them.

4. Residential buildings

(...)but the residential structures seem a bit... unnecessarily complex? They also have that unused ground floor level. It should either have outside access or building access that doesn't involve breaking down the walls.

I can try to make them more open on the inside (less divisions). The ground level is empty for 2 reasons: first to create a differentiation between the residential areas and the warehouses concerning the levels; second to all for something else (one of the ideas was entrance for a sewer level but it has been put off by now) or a store.

5. Extra 10x10 and 20x20 buildings

Agreed, I haven't checked to see if it's possible to have more than 100 map files but there shouldn't be a problem.

Since my inspiration for new buildings is a bit low right now, how about if people draw some of their own? The best ones could then be added to the terrain.
