agu666
Hello, I would like to know whether it is better to patch ufo defense with official patches (1.0 to 1.2 to 1.4) or use something like XcomUtil? I mean, does XcomUtil or anyother include fixes from official patches? Thnx in advance
[NKF]
There are various reasons to keep the early edition and just use XComutil to apply all the primary fixes. The most common reason a lot of players do this is also a rather cosmetic one: to keep the old death screams. The sample rates for the sound effects are low, so can sound very scratchy if not awful on some sound cards. There are various other reasons as well, including the ability to play with no stat caps (which has the potential to make extremely powerful supersoldiers that eventually get crippled). There are also some minor differences to stats or some inner game mechanics. What XComutil mainly does that is present in the patches is eliminate the pass codes when you start the game. This was officially removed from the game in the patches. Plus it has its own minor fixes. Perhaps the best fix it has that is not present in any of the patches is the difficulty bug fix. As for myself, I would recommend making a copy of your old copy of the game and patch the copy up to 1.4. Also fix the difficulty bug with XComutil or whatever other editor that allows you fix it. Use this copy to play your serious campaigns. - NKF
BladeFireLight
XcomUtil 9.7 now includes the original death sounds as an option for 1.4. Only reason I see left to not upgrade is for the Spanish and Italian that were not officially patched. Stat's rolling over is crippling to the game, and most of the other bugs in 1.0-1.3 are not fixed by XcomUtil.
agu666
Thanks for answers, but according to http://www.xcomufo.com/x1dl.html patch 1.4 damages the sound effect files, what about that?
3llense'g
Thanks for answers, but according to http://www.xcomufo.com/x1dl.html patch 1.4 damages the sound effect files, what about that?I'm also confused about that one. Does it damage the sounds or just change them?
[NKF]
It just changes them. Sectoids and Snakemen now have the same deep moan as the Floaters. Since they're less appealing to listen to than the original screams, a lot of folks see it as being broken. - NKF
agu666
Am I right if I use Dosbox to install patches 1.2 and 1.4? For example, I execute UPDATE.bat in dosbox for installing 1.2. But for patch 1.4 the readme says PKUNZIP -d UFOV14.ZIP and it doesn't find UFOV14.ZIP and I don't find it myself in the folders. So I'm stuck installing 1.4.
