Actually, I like the geoscape musics from EU very much.. i find them very relaxing. Still use them on my mp4 when i'm doing paperwork. :)

Lately, at the office, I've caught myself slowly strumming a rubber band (cut and held at both ends - loosely, but tightening it to increase the pitch as desired) near my ear to mimic the battlescape music.

You had to hear it on ye olde adlib with headphones - it was quite amazing when you imagined it as this sort of deep bass and you could make out a rythme in there you could almost mime along with. Mind you, this differed from soundcard to soundcard, so experiences may vary. The new fangled midi music piped through Window's FM synthesiser kind of makes it unbearable. The Playstation version of the battlescape music track also doesn't quite capture the same song that I heard.

As for the X-Com songs that I can't get out of my head: The second Geoscape track's my favourite so I often have it stuck in my head. That's GMGEO2.mid if you've got the CE edition. In particular, the intro for the second song. That's 4:02 minutes into it. The Playstation version (Track 05) does a great rendition of the intro buts seems to lack the midi version's lead guitar piece in the middle.

Amazing, isn't it? The FM Synthesizer does make the songs sound different, but I wouldn't say it makes the Battlescape Theme THAT bad. It gets boring after a while though, so I replace that midi with either the midi for "Act on Instinct" from Command & Conquer, or the song that plays in Episode 1, Mission 1 of Doom.

I have to say that i never liked the battlescape song, back when i had an AWE32 sound blaster, and now with ms FM Synthesizer. It's just boring, it keeps repeating and repeating the same sound... I just raplace it for the GMTACDRY.mid from tftd.

Althought i've played almost 4 years of x-com with no sound.. just listening to Vangelis Portraits album on the cd player, so x-com original songs don't give me much nostalgia as that music album :)

MIDI in C&C? Infidel!

On the serious note, yes - I like the music... especially at school tests...

The midi isn't directly FROM C&C, it was made by a fan OF C&C, if that's what you're wondering.

(And that doesn't automatically make me an infidel. If I deleted X-Com from my computer, that'd be a different story. But, of course, I know you're kidding.)

Now you've done it. Doom themes are now running rampant through my head. Currently Map09 from II.

Say what you want about the games (and yes I was an avid Duke3d player as well - so I'm not comparing), but Ultimate, II and Final had a fair number of memorable tracks that you could hum along to. Great mood setters.

When think about it, plenty of games around that time came out with great music tracks. The music was almost out of place against the grainy graphics and gamplay of ye olde times of past. Modern games have great tracks too (some moreso than others), but it's still fantastic what they could achieve with midi audio back then.
