No Calcinites?

Recommended Posts

Early in the game I never encountered an Aquatoid terror mission and therefore never captured a Calcinite. Of course, I need one (dead or alive, I think?) to get h2h weapons.

I'm seeing mostly lobstermen and a few gillmen now - this doubly sucks since not having h2h makes the lobstersnacks a real pain.

Anyway, what are the chances of an aquatoid terror mission at this point? I can't even remember the last time I saw an Aquatoid USO.

Also, is there anything I can do to increase the chances of seeing an Aquatoid? Somewhere I read that beating the aliens up badly might force them to use crappier races/equipment. That's nice, but I'm not looking forward to taking on Lobser colonies...

I guess I could just gut it out until I get MC (I have the lab and am training my first month's worth of soldiers), but the H2h weapons are so much fun...

When do terror missions usually start appearing?

It's just that I'm in June 2040, and I've just started my first terror mission. It's a cruise ship mission with Tasoths, two Tricenes, and a Calcinite on the first level. I'm halfway through the second part, and I've found some more Tasoths, an aquatoid and some biodrones.

I've only encountered two small aquatoid ships, both within the same week. I'm mianly running into gillmen and lobstermen.

You have to wait until mixed crews start showing up. At a mixed terror site, you may get lucky with a calcinite. But then you have to deal with hordes of lobstermen, tasoths, and biodrones.

Aquatoid or mixed battleships and dreadnoughts may have what you seek as well.

Best bet is to scope out an aquatoid colony and camp near it, waiting for a big ship to launch.

Only, to make matters more complicated, calcinites appear on land, not underwater. One good way to get them is to shoot a lot of aquatoid ships (if they do make an appearance) next to your base. Try to make it as close to your base as possible, as this tends to give you away. If you have any decoy bases built next to your base, or MC generators, remove them. If sufficiently infuriated, an aquatoid dreadnaught will be sent to attack the base. Then you should be able to meet up with a calcinite or two.

Mixed crews will do as well, so you might want to save just before the dreadnaught lands so that you can reload later to randomise the types of aliens that attack in case you don't get a calcinite.

Note, you only need the corpse, so be careful with your pulsers (heck, be careful anyway, since you don't want to destroy any base modules with excessive damage) :).

Just yesterday I saw my very first aquatoid terror site ever. Port attack on Oslo. Anyway, it was broad daylight and I still started to get waxed about halfway through the mission (this was before anyone had armor; I was still manufacturing it back at the base). I couldn't remember if you needed a live calcinite or a dead one, and I'd killed one near my Triton, so I grabbed a reservist (dude in the back w/ a thermal tazer & gauss pistol) and picked up the corpse, then put it in the sub. Then, I set to work avoiding/sniping aquatoids while capturing a live calcinite.

It was pretty easy to capture it, after I saved, left my computer and had a bowl of Apple Jacks while I thought about it. There was a large building where a calcinite had been roaming - it'd killed three civvies already - and one of my guys could see him. I used this guy to distract it while I brought another aquanaut around behind him with a thermal tazer (everyone in my squad has one, in case I find something I need). I came up behind the calcinite and drove the end of the tazer into its back. It still stands, not enough TU for another attack. So I shot it with the gauss rifle guy and KO'd it. Knowing I may have simply wounded it, I dropped all equipment but the tazer from the guy who tried to stun it, then picked up the calcinite and had a mad dash (4 turns) back to the Triton, then aborted the mission. I got a pretty good score from the artifacts and bodies near the sub, but lost a lot for 14 dead civilians.

Wow, that was a lot more than I expected to say. What I meant to say was, "it's not that hard to capture a live calcinite if you use one of your aquanauts as bait."

The problem is live calcinite does not give you anything extra (OK, maybe a new USOpedia entry, but other than that...)

The game usually tries to follow the below order for terror attacks:

Gillmen/Deepone

Aquatoid/Calcinite

Lobsterman/Biodrones

Mixed

Unfortunately, only the first one is truly guaranteed. Another problem is that mixed crews start appearing after a very long time. That being the case, I would not look down upon someone who cheated his way to Calcinites (especially people who have HtH fetish).

biodrones also appear with taoths. i once has a ship mission with tasoths and ´bio drones and it was not mixed.

He forgot to add Tasoth with Biodrones.

A calcinite would give M.C.Lab, if this was not researched already. But remember the M.C.Reader bug :)

huh?? i remember a living calc gave me vibro.

Well, you can use the editor and find out. I'm pretty sure a calcinite corpse will allow you to research vibro-blade, while a live calcinite will allow to research it and only after you finish that you'll be able to research M.C.Lab and Alien Origin.

Good luck checking :)

checked it... both dead and living calc gives vibro.

Hmmmm.....something I didn't know :Coffee:

What research projects did you get by having only a live calcinite in your alien containtment? I mean after its research?

The M.C.-Lab is supposedly given by 'terrorist' units. So far I know for sure that the Deep-One and Calcinite do indeed give this information - as they are terrorists.

But one could also so say that the biodrone and tentaculat are terrorists. It could be the case. I've always obtained a Deep-One or Calcinite a lot earlier than these two so I wouldn't really know - unless a bit of testing were to be conducted.

As for the calcinite giving vibroblade information - well, I don't think so. I've only ever obtained it from the corpse rather than a live specimen. But I won't discount the possibility.

That's what I said, too, but it seems his research tree is changed somehow.

Which version of TFTD do you have, Gurluas2000?
