remysweet
I have the DOS version of X-Com, but I can't install it due to "goto unexpected at this time". So I download the CE version, try to install it, and it asks me from which drive I am installing, a: or b: What do I need to do to get past this? j'ordos
Where did you get that version from? Didn't CE always come on CD? So you're probably still having the DOS version... That problem you have with the DOS version sounds familiar. Does it happen when you try to run xcom or install it? When you try to run it, note there are multiple .bat file. Try 'GO', or 'full'... remysweet
I have the DOS on CD, and I can run it straight from the CD without installing, but I cannot save, go to battlescape, etc. I tried to see a way around the "goto unexpected at this time" but everyone just says to download the CE. So I downloaded CE from abandonware site. I try to install and it is expecting a disc to be in drive a: or drive b:, but I have no discs, it is on my hard drive. j'ordos
Can't you copy the Xcom Dos files from your cd to your hard drive (make sure you disable 'read-only' for those folders)
remysweet
I suppose I could try that. Do you think that would get around the "goto unexpected at this time" error? And how would I install it from my hard drive without using the disc that it asks for?
[NKF]
Playing it off the cd obviously won't work. Files on a CD are read-only, so it wouldn't be able to create temporary files. Just referring to your initial question, have you tried passing your c: drive to it as a parameter? Like: d:\>install c: Passing A: or B: would just install to your floppy drives. You don't want to do that now do you? Could you get a screenshot of the window when it displays the unexpected goto error? By the way, is this the Red Ant/$oldout Software budget release of the game? - NKF Edited March 12, 2004 by NKF
remysweet
I have the DOS version on CD-ROM that I bought in 1994 or 95. I downloaded the CE from xcomdl.com. Here are the screen shots.

SupSuper
well, if you can run the game directly from the cd (more or less) than you should copy all the cd files to where you want ufo in your hdd (remember to disable read-only after copied) and it should remain playable, since it's a dos game thus it doesn't need any stupid dlls/registry/etc.i've had many cases of idiotic (too old) installers that don't let me install a game correctly (eg. Atomic Bomberman) so i just copy the files manually.
remysweet
ok, I'll try that and then see what else goes wrong thanks
remysweet
I can't set read-only status of the folders. I take it off and it comes right back on when I click it again. Would I be able to move the folders from CE over?...or would that be disasterous? Edited March 13, 2004 by remysweet
remysweet
the CE has the same problem. however, there is good news. I played the DOS version without the CD since I copied everything over, and it worked. I was able to setup my base, go to a crash site, complete it and return. I was even able to save and load(even though I could not uncheck read-only on the game folders?....)however, there is no sound and now it won't let me set it up. argh! [NKF]
Doesn't look like you've got the setup program in your hard drive install. Copy that file from the cd and see what happens. As for the read-only status of the folders, I wouldn't worry about it. It's just the read-only status of the files in the folder that you really need to worry about. - NKF
remysweet
hm, it copied from the cd as "shortcut to .pif" that's strange. anyway, I doubleclicked it and got to pick the soundcard, dma, and all that jazz
j'ordos
and here's my CE problem. I do not have the discs for this version as I downloaded it from xcomufodl.comaccording to what I see there, that's not the CE, but the DOS version . edit : ah, I see why you have the DOS version. You downloaded from Lost treasures, and I suppose you knew french good enough to know télécharger is download (or you just took a guess ). But the site actually contains two versions. DOS AND CE. You need to scroll down a bit further where it says : 'UFO version Windows 3,24 Mo'. That's the one you need. remysweet
I do not know French. I think in your post for the abandonware site you had said "telecharger=download"...so...I did download DOS then, I guess.

remysweet
yeah, but I still have no sound. and I'm getting the "start a crash site and immediately end with the results of your last crash site bug". damn.
j'ordos
You could try to fix those by using DOSbox. Else get the CEElse, use VDMSound and save a lot
remysweet
I haven't had much luck with DOSBox. It actually locks up whenever I try to run X-Com. I have the DMA and IRQ and all that set right, and I've read the sticky thread about DOSBox. I've just been playing it from the C: prompt with Windows XP. Robo Dojo 58
If you run DosBox too hard for your computer, X-COM will lock up. Slow it down a bit, or raise the framerate to unlock it.
remysweet
How much should I lower it? I changed the DOSBox config down to 3000 and I still just get a black screen after the "Dos4gw" message. If it matters, I have DOSBox 0.61 running on XP.
