Base Attack Spoiled By Lobster Dudes!

Just assaulted my first alien base, and made it thru the first level... only to start the next level inside the base facing a mean lobster man throwing stun grenades at me, disabling almost the entire team!

I'm not very advanced in the game yet (end of 2nd month) and just equipped the guys with sonar blastas... no armor, no stun grenades available yet. :( I have the feeling that it'd be futile to try making it through the level without better armament (and armor), especially since the lobster guys don't seem to mind when they're being shot at (and hit). It's also unlikely that I'll be able to make it to the synomium thingie unharmed (and un-mindcontrolled :).

Just wondering - what do you experts think? Can it be done? Should it be attempted? I stunned many aliens on the surface and would really like to bring them in, but I can't do that unless I win the battle... but then, loosing my entire platoon in the process also doesn't seem very reasonable.

Just curious. :)

It is possible, It's just gonna be a real pain in the arse. I made a similar mistake in my first game and ended up with 5 men, Best thing to do is stick together and save in lots of different slots. The base isn't that big, and the device entrance is always on level 0 (correct me if i'm wrong) You can probably just run to the device and back without much conflict (never seem to encounter much resistance on my games).

The lobster dudes are best killed with a firing squad, but if they keep shooting back try using a decoy (those guys who keep panicing and falling under enemy control), use up all his AP each turn and chuck his weapon. cannon fodders the best solution to all your problems.

Oh, the guys you stunned earlier don't transfer (unless you're carrying them) so don't bother, just blow the base and get the heck out of there.

I never attack an alien base without at lesaat Ion armor, it's basically suicide otherwise, and I'm trying to quit reloading, SO DON'T TEMPT ME!! :hammer:

:D

As a general rule, either Blades or Stun is the way to down Lobsters, they don't take half damage from those...

Sonic weapons of all kinds (especially the cannons) are also delightful against them.

Oh and, one more thing...

DO YOUR UTMOST TO STUN BOMB THE INSIDE OF THE COMMAND CENTER!

Oh and, call me crazy, but I just LOVE hunting for every last one of the bug-eyed monsters when I do base assaults. I KILL THEM ALL!

Then I get the whole base recovery! Sweet!

However, I have noticed a bug on this note...

If you win the game in that manner, all stunned soldiers are listed as MIA, which really ticks me off.

Hmm... given you're only in the second month.... and given your situation, a retreat is highly reccomended. Unless you're close to the Synonium room. Don't forget to pick up your men as you retreat... leave no man/woman behind.

I never attack alien colonies until I get mag-ion armor, displacers, MC, and a Leviathan.

If you asked me where I got the Lobbieman commander from... its from a mission where they were foolish enough to attack my base.

Apart from saving/reloading, being lucky, spreading your team out hit and run behind cover, there's a TFTD editor by ClarkWehyr http://www.iquest.net/~rclark/ClarkWehyr.html
