hereticus
Hi all, I was wondering what are the major differences and bugs in Play Station version of XCOM 1 and 2. Which would you prefer to play PC or PSX? I have both of the games on PSX and do enjoy playing them a lot on my PSP due to the PSP portability. Zombie
The biggest difference between the PC and PSX version is that the PSX version is "cleaner". It has better music, sound effects, animated UFOPaedia entries, right click behind a door opens it without walking through and a lot of the bugs have been eliminated too. (Off the top of my head: primed Proximity Grenades now work between turns, mission ends when all aliens are dead or stunned, vertical waypoints for blaster bombs are possible, no difficulty bug, etc). For those reasons alone I'd be playing this version of the game all the time. Unfortunately, you can't easily mod this version and the load times for missions can be extraordinarily long. I'm not sure how long the load times in the PSP though. - Zombie
hereticus
Thanks for the prompt response. So I guess I am just going to stick to the PSX version since I dont care for modding of the game. When it comes down to the game loading times on PSP its much quicker than on the PSX. Since PSP has 2gb of ram and CPU can be OC to 333 Mhz. If you have psp I would strongly recommend installing the game. Again thanks for the quick response to my question.
[NKF]
Wouldn't mind trying that myself. Would that be on the memory stick or the PSP Go? The PSP and PSP 3000 don't come with hard drives. Perhaps running the game on the PS2 would cut down on the load times. The PSX is a very slow system in comparison. My only nitpicky gripe with the PSX edition of UFO would the 3d rendered aircraft views. The renderings aren't terribly exciting and you lose the neat illustrations that come with the PC version. Surprising they didn't use them as backgrounds. By the way, there's one thing I'd like clarified re: the door opening option. I know on the PC version it costs 8 TUs to open and walk through a door. I also seem to recall that it costs 8 TUs to just open the door on the PSX version. Does this mean that the PSX version costs more to open and then step through a door? I'm assuming walking through and automatically opening a closed door costs the standard 8 TUs. - NKF
hereticus
The game has to be converted from ISO image to format supported by psp custom firmware than just copy paste in to the directory on the memory stick. As far as i know the ufo does not work on my PS2. I think that might have something to do with me trying to remove scratches from the disc using the scratch removing tool. I get disk read error and game wont boot or the game is not supported by ps2 at all. Any way the game only works on my old PSX when I stand the console on its right side . Yesterday I sat down and measured time it takes the game to load on psp(battlescape) and it was about 35 seconds. The advantage of the PSX Ufo is that you dont have to walk through the door to open it. Just put the cursor behind it and press O to open the door. Thats a huge tactical advantage and saves some rookie lives. And I think it only takes 4 TU's to open the door to ufo or a house. However, like you mentioned walking through the door does cost 8 TU's. Other difference I've seen was the Heavy Laser on PSX version has 85% accuracy instead of 110% and the damage of the weapon is 85 instead of 120 like in PC version. Yet that does not make my HW specialist miss much. I gave that weapon to two squad members that start the tactical part of the game in front row of the Skyranger they both had accuracy stat at slightly above 50% and surprisingly enough 90% of the time shots fired are dead on target. The stats you mention for the PC version are a modification made by XcomUtil and was used erroneously by the site here. - Zombie
