Well I'm not so sure about the font right now. I'd like to see it in color before passing any judgement. Me I used to be good at making ascii, ansi and jpeg artwork type fonts. As for the jpeg fonts that was back when I had a good pixle pushing paint program and I did hand shading to do some pretty high quality fonts. Too bad pixle pushing paint progies aren't as popular as they once were because you can't do the same with gimp really. :) Anyways It would take me an entire day to make a title that way since hand shading is very time consuming but it produces pretty sweet titles.

Well it would be silly if this project gets killed for copyright and trademark violations just because we had X-Com in the name. :/ I want it too but I'm worried about the future when we have almost finished the game and some corperate jerk decides to kill it and see's a way because of the name.

It can't get killed that way anyway.

Besides, X-COM is not a registered trademark, since it occured historically I believe - the game by that name is.

We dont know if it is copyrighted or not, but we should play it safe... but i bet that a game like XCom with the same playability could be seen as a copy for every judge out there. If we dont mention XCom, copyright holders wont have anything. It is just another strategy game. And given that Firaxis had send a letter to Micah because the links he had, they should be aware of this.

To Firaxis: If you are reading this "Sid Meyer you are the best designer ever, i had played Civ until tiredom. I definitly think that you should make a brand New XCOM for all the fans out there, and believe me there are a lot."

:D

Here's a trick.

Xenocide begins with X
XCOM begins with X

I don't know the justification but, say, if somehow the name was

Xenocide.com

you could arrange things so that it says XCOM and yet doesn't if you catch my meaning. (damit Micah you don't have the sly smiley in the list, I posted a whole bunch of smileys in a thread somewhere around here -- one of them was corupted into a happy purple sausage).

As for the graphic. I'll forgo stating it should be in color as I assume that's what you intend. The present font reminds me of Diablo and demons and swords and medieval kind of stuff. I think the Xenocide should be in a "computer" font, perhaps an older one like Data 70. The idea being it would look cold, impersonal, uncaring; reflecting the aliens attitude to us, (if you read the opening sentences to H. G. Wells "War of the Worlds" it captures the feeling I'm going for - those words still send shivers).

No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinise the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water.  With infinite complacency men went to and fro over this globe about their little affairs, serene in their assurance of their empire over matter.  It is possible that the infusoria under the microscope do the same.  No one gave a thought to the older worlds of space as sources of human danger, or thought of them only to dismiss the idea of life upon them as impossible or improbable.  It is curious to recall some of the mental habits of those departed days.  At most terrestrial men fancied there might be other men upon Mars, perhaps inferior to themselves and ready to welcome a missionary enterprise.  Yet across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us.

(H.G. Wells, "The War of the Worlds")

The X should look like a piece of equipment (preferable weapon-like), I'm not sure though if it should look terrestial or extra-terrestrial but I think the edges should be rounded.

Check those out for possible fonts. I'm kinda partial to #10 and I'm gonna make a little submission of my own using it...but let me know what you think of the other ones. If you are wondering why the numbers don't go in order, there were originally 20 pictures (and you can view the missing ones by replacing pictures.html with 2.jpg, 3.jpg, etc. for the missing numbers) but I dropped it down to those 12 for size and loading reasons.

Besides, X-COM is not a registered trademark, since it occured historically I believe - the game by that name is.

Well X-Com in the name would link our project directly with the original game and then they have an easier case to prove infront of a judge that we are making an illegal copy of their original work. Nintendo for instance got the Great Giana Sisters to never be legally distributed because it was too much like super mario bros. Anyone who has a copy of that game has a cracked version that came out before the release that never happened. Anyway here the thing is X-Com really is not an original game. it is a translation of old paper and pencil stratagy games from paper to the computer. Since it is not an original idea we can do the same thing but adding X-Com to the name would instead say that we are getting our ideas from the computer game called X-Com. :P anyways the law is to complicated since we are on the internet and the laws around the world are diffrent. So I think it is best to play it safe.

Ok just Xenocide then :) because we're not about to revisit the name war thing. As for Xenocide: Fight For Freedom it caused a big fight in here with. We later came up with a system where the game came with diffrent modes of play and one of the multiplater modes that Me, PeterDragon and Warlord developed got named Fight For Freedom. :) I still would like an intro for that where part of it has a TV screen on the news with a Ted Coppel(sp) look-a-like and behind him is a screen showing a UFO and saying Fight For Freedom. ;) Stewy was like one of the ones who hated the fight for freedom name and sorta gave that as an example. ;) to me that sound like a cool intro *G*

oops sorry :) now that I'm moderator I accidently edited your post when I tried to quote. Anyways :)

I don't think an ansi picture would work for the project. I used to be able to make high quality jpegs by first making a nice ansi font in single color and then taking a screenshot of it. I then added curves and spent a huge amount of time hand shading the jpeg. Results are amazing but :) I don't have the tools to do that anymore.

The only problem I have with The newly modified version of my graphic is that it has a lense flare, which in my humble opinion, is the most overused filter ever. I have to dig up my other CD for photoshop that has all my filters, and then I'll see what I can produce. I'm having a hard time texturizing the background of that title because it's all actually just one font. (which means when I do stuff like turn it red, I have to start over from scratch.....)

*giggles* Sorry about that, I couldn't resist the urge to use phaser rifles. (Yes, I'm a roddenberry nut.)

I tried making 'em more metallic, but photoshop wouldn't cooperate. (just gives the things more gloss.) Anyway, I'll try my luck with a farscape weapon and something from babylon or maybe even a carbine(?).

Oh, and Maverick, just a suggestion. Maybe you can you make the letter C have more red?

Okay, first I forget who suggest many fonts and said they like #10, often as I am, I'm the lone voice saying nooooo, this will be no exception, that font is, I don't know, broken. But since I'm likely to get out-voted I'll just ask, for wittle me, if you could produce a sample logo using font #6.

As for the orbital graphic, it's fancy, you're very creative and gifted with the software but I read it as Enocide, please modify it.

Micahdg, you let the cat out of the bag!!!!!

"Xenocide: Lock and Load"? Please refer to my FFF arguments regarding that one. But it's not fair to be critical without making some kind of suggestion. So, I'll submit myself to ridicule as well, to wit . . .

Xenocide: The First Alien War.
That ought to put the pressure on us.

Heck since H. G. Welles is long dead even
Xenocide: War of the Worlds
works, recall that's a story about Mars invading. Heck we could probably nab his opening monologue (change nineteenth to twentieth) and use that in the intro (I bet it's public domain now, and beside we can just credit him and all is well).

Xenocide: Fight For Freedom (just kidding)

Xenocide: U. S. A. U. S. A. U. S. A. (okay now I'm overdoing it!)

The book has to be more than 80 years old, which I think it is. Actually, after getting that opening monologue quote, I'm probably going to insert that as the primary textual intro for the cutscene. The rest I want narrated so that I can make an animation to go along with it. I'm still working on the best settings for the video, which will very soon only slightly resemble the form it now has. #6 font is called Architext and I'm working on it right now... (by the way guys, I'm not doing anything fancy with the background for the title, I think that the text we use for it should look good on all backgrounds.)

I finished that one with number 6...and hark, i may have stumbled upon something.......tell me what you guys think. (by the way, the X is from a different font, and I have one with the X from this font if you'd like to see that too)

The earth thing was not bad but it seems to me that it looked like some other games title page, maybe alpha centari I can't remember.

Can you make the look more like an X -shaped UFO, just to see.

Or how about superimposing Xenocide on a sinister looking Sectoids close up face, perhaps with two swaths of light forming an X on its face, whatever. Have lots of shadow.

Since nothing is "official" here in this discussion, borrowing of copyright images should be okay, for these concept/working designs. As I recall there was an official version of XCOM in the works that was to have 3D graphics and stuff like that anyway if you can find that website I seem to remember it had a sinister looking Sectoid (it was even gritting it's teeth, as I recall). Do a search for "X-Com: Alliance".

I had a hunch about anouther source:
From Dark Colony
