hey, I've been playing the origional x-com for years, and I've been checking out this page. I love the idea of an x-com remake, when I saw that your development forum was open for viewing and post I couldnt help but read throught a few threads. But yea, there is a point to this post, one think that has always pissed me off about the orional x-com was the lack of a melee attack............why is it that when there is an alien sitting right beside one of my solders, that that solder cant just deck em right across the jugular? The stun rod was nice, but I think that solders need to be able to make a melee attack when they run out of ammo or have nothing equiped..............what do you guys think?............if would sure be nice if you could incororate it into your remake.

I agree with that 100%
The vibroblades of Tftd were... nice, but totally unrealistic.
Hitting an alien with your gun SHOULD do some damage, especially if it's a mere Sectoid... :D

If I was planning a melee combat system I would make the squaddie butt-strike or pistol whip or use a combat knife.. and I would make those squaddies with heavy weapons unable to fight back or drop their weapon.

Here I go an angry brother gonna make his move
But can I buck him in the city so I never lose?
See I'm a get him in the crowd with a couple heavies
And lay the barrel to the ground, hold the gat steady
And now I'm ready for my adversary, talk is cheap
I'm looking for a way to make a plan gonna keep it neat
So don't be telling me to get the non-violent spirit
'cause when I'm violent is the only time the devils hear it
'cause all I want to see is m****f***ing brains hanging

Have you seen what those things look like? I'll give you a cinder block with a 4 foot length of watermain pipe fastened to it. I'll use a knife.. and we'll have a fight and we'll see whether you want to drop it or not. ;)

Actually it does, it's just SO unweildy, it's just not made for that... it's like comparing a guy wielding a sledgehammer and another wielding a sword... The proper balance of the sword makes it possible to find openings and get back in defense while the other guy is still wondering what's happenened. It's just far quicker...

Being a swordplay fan, I must agree with FuxOr666... ^_^

Then again, I remember the Novel and comics book on "the Eternal war", where a vast military campaign against unknown aliens actually lasted a thousand year but where the soldier who did it only got older by 20 years or so, because of the relativistic effects of Near speed of light travel... The point is that, in 800 years or so they had developped Stasis fields, where nothing that's not properly shielded can exceed a few meters per second, including light, thus preventing any and all directed energy and projectile weapons... They had to take (titanium) swords, as well as bows on their space suits... Quite cool idea actually... :D
I'd like that in Xenocide... Except I might not want to see a Chryssalid THAT close :devillaugh:

Here's something I've always wanted to do. I'm a big fan of Police Squad shows staring Leslie Neilson (they only made six, but those led up to the Naked Gun movies). Anyway, they obviously made light of cop shows in general but in the opening credits of the shows, you'd see Drebin shooting it out with a thug a few steps away, they'd both run out of ammo, then they'd throw their weapons at each other....I like that :)

Lets get some objects we could pick up and hurl if it came down to it.

Anyway, I like the melee stuff too, but not sure how far I'd want it taken, though I do like simply being at least able to punch a sectoid in his scrawny little neck (how does their neck support their heads, let alone their bodies? heh)

Hey also, what about drop kicking or punting an alien when their down? That'd be fun too. Kick 'em in the family jewels I say! :)

That'll learn 'em.

Yep, they've been genetically engineered not to suffer that

Seriously though, a heavier weapon would be clumsier to hit with, but would damage more...
A knife would damage almost as much, but would not be armor piercing...

All nice ideas that we need to cogitate a bit more. ^_^

A heavy weapon could only be useful if there was a way to sneak up on aliens and kill/stun them with a single blow from behind IMHO.

Oh, and this kind of attack, if it's implemented, just must be dependent on the research of the concerned species.
Endure; in enduring, grow strong.

hmmm, very good points...
Both of them. ^_^

A heavy weapon would be good for only one swing, and we'd DEFINITELY need an autopsy before being able to reach any vital organs on the most armored/weirdly made species, unlike the Sectoid, a good smack should take that one down... Robotics should be immune.

Then again, sneaking up on an alien in a UFO's cramped quarters is not so hard... It's the only way to kill Lobstermen solo in Tftd... :D

While it would be cool to watch you punch a Muton out, I suspect actual special forces melee combat involves a lot more stealth and grappleing. First, if you just bash the alien real hard forward or down, they may just turn around and you shoot you. You would want to at least grapple a little to turn their instinctual reactions against them and give you a better chance at slitting their throat or vital organs. So.....

General Stunning) This is the sneak-attack where you go behind them, or to the side, and then grapple. While grappling you pull a few stun wires over them, getting as many contacts as possible as electricity runs through it. Some of them are also stabbed in to increase conduction.

With Atuopsy Data) You can build an advanced combat knife using alien alloys. THis knife, with appropriate training and toxin from testing, can penetrate weak spots of alien armors and deliver toxins during grappling.

Another use of grappling is as a reaction whenever an alien comes around a corner or door too close. Then you tilt the weapon to avoid immediate death and start grappling.

Warning though, non-biting aliens will have various profiencies in melee combat and suprising you. Mutons are elites while sectoids can barely stab their own grandmothers.

Bayonets, even in Napoleonic times, were mostly for show and scaring horses. They are not very practical for several reasons......

1) Weight affects how barrel deflects(slightly, but enough) and makes turning much more difficult.
2) Bayonet is very difficult to sight with, reducing accuracy considerably.
3) Even when made with modern metals, the long and thin blade tends to snap after a contact or two.
4) Hard to remove intact from said body if you manage to kill someone or something.

I know AK-47s have mounts for bayonets, but I really can't recall them being used much in modern combat. Infantry are trained how to fight in melee combat without bayonets and it seems the army would go with what is superior. However for those aching to spear a sectoid......

You have a mini-slide, harpoon type system. The housing box for the two harpoons and the rail is on the underside of the barrel. The trigger guard and trigger are then transferred to the underside of the melee housing. This ensures that during regular fire your sights are undisturbed and balance is towards the rear of the weapon. To make sure you don't accidentally spear your own hand while handing forward of the trigger guard, the melee system would only activate if you used that hand to depress two safety buttons after having switched a selector to 'harpoon'(handled automatically in game). This gives you a few feet of room to then charge in and handle the already heavily wounded alien. Also these harpoons can be upgraded with stun capability, toxin delivery, and directed shrapnel abilities.

Bayonets in modern days are used, but more as tools and less than as weapons.

The Army Special Forces does not teach grappling and stealth, but rather it teaches you how to quickly incapaciate or kill a threat in 1 or 2 hits.

I find that your idea about a harpoon system is very good though. I cannot see someone in their right mind running up to an alien and spearing it unless it was already injured, but it is a believable system in the case where a soldier would...
