Admiral Harkov
I usually use lame names, like first headcom or X-Head, or something like that, in my first game I used more imaginative names but soon I started to mess up with them and send the Australian fighters to intercept UFOs near my german base Edited January 7, 2005 by Admiral Harkov

XComOnyx
America (Florida): Crockett (Miami Vice reference)America (Detroit): Motown (from a different game)Australia: PaulHoganSucksGermany: GerryVilleBrasil: Ahhhhlessandra (Alessandra Ambrosio reference)Japan: BeastInDaEast Since you can only have 8 bases, it's not too hard to remember what they do or where they are, so I tend to have fun with the names. Tactical_Impact
I have used many different ways of naming my bases. At the moment I'm considering naming my bases as such: (with correct geographical coordinates) North America: GRAND CANYON, MOUNT RUSHMORE or NIAGARA FALLSSouth America: ANGEL FALLS or MACHU PICCHUEurope: STONEHENGE or COLOSSEUMAsia: MT. EVEREST, TAJ MAHAL or ANGKOR WATAfrica: VICTORIA FALLS, GREAT PYRAMID or SPHINXAustralia: GREAT BARRIER REEF Its cool to think there are bases underneath these natural, ancient and modern wonders of the world even though most of them arent actually inside the countries im trying to protect. That is a question I have: "Do the countries favor you more if you put a base inside their borders? And what if you put more than one base inside their borders?" Crafty
Probably a bit dull, but I go with city names so I can keep track of where they are without a second thought on interceptions, transfers, etc. Here's the bases for my current game, in order of construction: DenverMunichNovosibirskNairobiMelbourneSao PaoloIslamabadAntarctica

SaintD
My bases aren't named very creatively. However I do admit to placing them where I know people if I can. I name my bases after the country where I place them. I do have exceptions. In the US I name after the state, put the base in NORAD, or near Seattle and name it Duvall. I also name a base Valencia, since I know someone who live in Venezuela. -D

Sangrahl
Base names are pretty straightforward for me... Alpha Base - Initial start base in central Texas, North AmericaAsia - Second base, on the line between Central and East AsiaEuro - Third base, usually around SwitzerlandAfrica - Center of Africa, positioned equidistant between Nigeria, South Africa and EgyptS.Amer - Western border of BrazilAus - Central AustraliaZulu - Centerpoint of the Arctic (old movie reference)Omega - Centerpoint of Antarctica (only if I center on Earth Defense and not takign the fight to them as soon as possible) Alpha quickly evolves into a research base housing a single combat squad, a compliment of 44 Engineers for the single Workshop (eventually replaced by scientists/Laboratory), and as many Scientists and Labs as can be crammed into the space. All secondary (non-unique) sites are made in systematic fashion to get 94 Engineers pumping out Laser Cannons within 3 months of breaking ground. (with an on-duty Interceptor / Large Radar Array or two) Zulu (and Omega, if I take don't plan on going to Cydonia as soon as possible) become my later deployment and training bases. All extraneous items are sold off, and building supplies are shipped around the world to production facilities... Just need weapons and ammo for the 4 sets of squads in a "3 On, 1 Off" duty cycle. I use the XComUtil starting base to save my sanity, and stick to similar base designs for defense. I'm all for them coming down for a spot of tea with a side of hot plasma. (Only defensive facility I prefer to deploy is a Mind Shield... Spoils of battle = free income/restock supplies, and a bit of fun with miniscule )
Hobbes
I've been trying a different base construction scheme lately for UFO... Omega Prime (Arctic - Ground Assault teams and Science Research)Omega Complex (Antarctic - Manufacturing)Omega 1 (Sicily)Omega 2 (Cuba)Omega 3 (Madagascar)Omega 4 (Taiwan)Omega 5 (Solomon Islands)Omega Depot (Hawaii - Storage) The disposition of the bases makes it look more like TFTD but it actually works. The numbered bases are only radar stations to detect UFOs as they fly towards their objective areas (75% of Earth's surface is oceans). I only keep Interceptors/Firestorms on the Arctic, Cuba and Taiwan. Edited June 26, 2007 by Hobbes

Steelion
I jsut make up base names, but I usually have a base in Europe to start, Then open a base in America, and another in Asia. After that it's just pick and choose.
Rainier
I usually follow this practice: - First base is in Europe, in the Alps: HANNIBAL- Second base smack in the middle of USA: DUST BOWL- Third Base is MANCHURIA (duh) Depending on the way I've decided to go through the game, the number and location of additional bases varies. In the current game I quickly built the base HOLOTNA in Siberia near a Snakeman base, as an educational facility. African base (seldom built, the game has an inherent trend to leave the old colonies to rot) is usually AMANDLA, South American (ditto) is AMAZONAS. Quite often I build a base in Australia, named AUSTRALIS (after a nice Call of Cthulhu reference).
Munkeh
I've been using the names/locations of actual appropriate airbases, using google earth. Some are decomissioned, some have a bit of a reputation for suspicious activity. There's Nellis afb (obviously).Belaya, in russia.Maparangwane in....botswana?Nevatim - israelMount pleasant - falklands....etc etc. Some of these are kinda off the beaten path, so to speak. I make a point of not putting bases in countries that have defected to the alien cause.

chiasaur11
Depends on mood. Lately, I'm leaning towards secret agency names. Latest game, my American base was Delta Green, and they were luckier than any X-Com unit has a right to be. Meanwhile, Europe had Eurocom, and they got ten kinds of doomed. It's superstitious, but I think it'll influence my decisions in the future. Edited July 18, 2010 by chiasaur11
