Tekumze
Hello I am a fan of X-COm and just recently bumped into this site. I don't know where to post this but from what I read the names will be randomly generated depending on nationality and such. Well it just so happens that I have access to a HUGE database of names and surnames. Names and Surnames are separated and are available for many countries from USA to Poland and China. Each country has it's own name and surname database that can be used to generate random names. If anybody is interested I can provide samples... just tell me how. GreatGold
Welcome Tekumze! Thank you for posting your offer, I'm sure there are some people interested in it around here. How did you come by this database, and is it open source? How is it setup? How are names drawn and matched? Are they seperated by gender? Anyhow, someone is going to come along and want more information about this Im sure... Gold
Guest Azrael
Hmm, wasn't LordT making a database of names and surnames? he had a pretty big one already, maybe someone should ask him?
GreatGold
Hmm, wasn't LordT making a database of names and surnames? he had a pretty big one already, maybe someone should ask him? Yeah, he definately was. I cant find any threads on the issue other than the RPG one. Still relevant, but I was positive there were others as well. Anyone remeber more? Astyanax
I found a thread with a link to LordT's names database. There seem to be many names, but I haven't looked at it too closely. Edited April 21, 2005 by Astyanax
Tekumze
Well... names are all male. The names are a part of database for a free online game called Hattrick (football/soccer manager). This is also why names are all male. The names were all supplied by the users and I am pretty sure I can convince Hattrick staff to share as it would not hurt them one bit. Since 250k users (I think) play the game the database got huge since it's used to generate the name for the players.
Moriarty
that sounds really nice... and it would definitely add some variety. now if we only could find a free online game database featuring female names... I'd say if the developers of the game don't mind, and if the original providers of the names ( = the players of that online game) already signed a waiver by submitting the names, we should take that list, because it's as good a thing as we will ever be able to create, probably. EDIT: btw, will the gender chance for newly generated soldiers in xenocide be 50-50, us being nice and politically correct, or will it be closer to real life, with male predominance in armed forces? GreatGold
Quick question - Would a senior member like to comment on the current status of any random name generator and database already in progress? I would just like to see all this great information go to good use, and not gathered if it is uncompatable. Otherwise, this looks like a good lead.
