  1. Sorry to bump needlessly (I hate doing that) but does anyone have the first idea if this can be fixed? As nice as Xcom is, I'd like to play against an intelligent human for a change....
  2. I dunno, with some of the exotic materials/devices being recovered, I bet that would be a pretty dangerous job in itself. And as for the autopsies......well, have you ever seen Independence Day?
  3. Duly noted. Thanks fellas!
  4. Hmm. Well I can't for the life of me remember how I patched the game up. I'm fairly certain I went through the older patches and worked up to 1.4.... However, the fact that one of my troops already has over 80 tu's would suggest otherwise, right? I might carry on as is, to see what happens. However, if need be, is there anything that would prevent me from running through the patches later? I mean, would my saves be ok?
  5. Hmm, well I'm pretty certain I'm on dos 1.4 iirc. By "well gone", you mean the wraparound has been reinstated? Bugger. Is there no way of preventing my troopers from eventually becoming invalids, other than not using them too much?
  6. Ok, this should be brief and straightforward. I always used to play CE, and only recently switched over to dos when CE began developing issues due to a gfx driver update (which I never did figure out how to fix). Anyway, it has a few differences which I was vaguely aware of before playing it. The aliens are cannier with their BBs for one thing. Now, one thing I've noticed is that one of my veterans has seen enough action that his stats are very high. However, I notice that his TUs have crept up to 82. Didn't the cap in CE used to be 80? I only ask because I vaguely remember reading something about this once. Can't remember the specifics, but it was to the effect that eventually the stats (and even my score with the funding nations) will eventually get so high that they'll loop back around to 0. Which would be bad. So can anyone fill me in on this please? I don't want my best colonel to become hopelessly immobile, or my bank account to dry up.
  7. I was under the impression autoshot had been removed for balance reasons, although I can't confirm as I've yet to get the darn game running. Ho hum.
  8. I imagine it'd be a bit like being part of an american bomber crew in WW2. New guys coming in every other week, life expectancy of a few missions. Difference is, of course, at least those guys got to have fun between missions. Xcom agents would be stuck in a bunker, running room-clearing drills and pouring over intelligence reports.
  9. Any ideas boys? This is utterly unplayable as is.
  10. Hmm. Improvement, but..... It initialises, but it hangs quite badly. The window just displays the desktop (and if I move the window around, the same section of desktop displayed will move along with it). The display will only update if covered over, say if I maximise another window (browser or folder, etc) and then minimise it again. I'll have to do that every time I change the display, say by opening new bits of menu on the startup scree. That make sense?
  11. Hmm, is there a command line for running it windowed? When it starts up, it seems to be in a window slightly smaller than the screen anyway, although that might just be because it's struggling to start up. I'm running a Radeon 9600SE anyway. Latest drivers, but I'm sure I remember reading somewhere that UFO2000 has known issues with ATI cards. Or am I thinking of another game? Actually, I might.
  12. I've got a clean install around here somewhere (as they say, always have a backup). I'll see if using that makes a difference. edit: err, alright. Tried it with a clean install from the unmodded folder. I no longer get the PCK error, but I still get the black window. Still get sound though, and if I click it sounds like it's working through the menu's (I get the 'bleep'), so it's probably a display issue. Any ideas?
  13. English, yep. Most recent version of util, 9.6. Only other mod is BombBlokes terrain-specific uniforms. Running on XP, not that it should matter.
  14. # 2008-06-03 20:08:08 : Extension './extensions/weapons-original', loading time=0.094s. # 2008-06-03 20:08:08 : Extension './extensions/weapons-ufo2000', loading time=2.391s. # 2008-06-03 20:08:44 : !! Error: Assert failed at line 270 of src/pck.cpp. My xcom version is Dos 1.4, with xcomutil installed. No extensions to UFO that I'm aware of, just a straight install of the Beta.
  15. Sorry to necro and old old thread, but I keep getting this. Currently using the most recent beta, though I tried to play this game what must've been a good year or so ago. Same problem.
