I got to thinking of how cool it would be if someone made a Hollywood movie of XCOM. I know this genre has been done to death in movies, but there has never been any movie done quite like the story of XCOM. XCOM could almost be considered a by-product of the alien movie stereotype. I could almost envision the plot: Opening scene: "A young family driving down a dusty highway among farmland. Suddenly a massive flying saucer soars overhead." "A scene of newspapers flying off the stands with the headline,'UFO's, Abductions appearing everywhere, USA has no answer." A news reporter, "At the latest G8 Summit, world leaders met to discuss the growing threat of extraterrestrial sightings. Japan's failed attempts to deal with the threat has sparked debate over new measures to combat the aliens...". Later in the movie there would be scenes of putting together a montage (sort of like putting the group together in "Oceans 11", or "Armageddon") of the best soldiers from around the world played by famous Hollywood "tough-men" (and women). Battlescape sequences would be awesome. Just like in "Aliens, a drop-ship would carry in the troops to a battered city where heavy terror missions had taken place. The squad would move from building to building on foot using motion trackers and HWPs to guide them in the dark. At first the soldiers would be cocky, thinking that their skill, training and weaponry would make killing the aliens easy. After the first battle, however, there would be many casualties and a sense of desperation of how weak they truly are. But there is hope! They managed to bring back some of the alien equipment and studies are finding new, powerful weapons to even the odds. I'm not sure it could all be done in one movie, perhaps the first movie would end in the hope of turning the alien technology against them. The second movie would end, eventually, on Mars. Even though there have been a lot of movies about aliens and invasions and stuff, I don't think there has been anything quite like this. Where the humans and aliens engage in close-quarter fighting on the ground among human civilization. "War of the Worlds" never really gave hope to the human race, as the battle never really became a fair fight. "Independence Day" really only featured combat in flying craft, we never got to see what the invading ground army would have done. XCOM is obscure, almost unknown to casual gamers, but this isn't the first time Hollywood has done a movie based on a practically "unknown" title. XCOM has been rated by many sources to be one of the best games of all time, if not THE best, so it seems that it deserves movie justice. Besides, how many people are tired of watching sci-fi, alien horror movies? I think, as movie history has shown, nobody is.
