  1. Tsk. Ospreys. As long as the large, fast aircraft is capable of VTOL, I'd say it can land wherever it wants as long as it's careful not to land on a house. Now there's an idea - picking a landing point for the aircraft, and vectoring it in. Though paratroopers sound like fun, it wouldn't really be useful for anything other than terror missions (instant troop dispersion!) as then you'd have the issue of recovering your troops.
  2. You may also wish to try the steps I gave Mikker when he had a similar problem in the link above.
  3. I use Winamp 2.81; The fastest, lightest, and most compatible version of Winamp available. Winamp 3 got rid of all previous plugin support, nearly all customization, became more bloated than Realplayer (!), and overall sucks. Winamp 2 is much more flexible, loads in an instant, takes nearly no resources, and can be rigged to play anything (and comes with support for OGG files, just as Winamp 3 does). http://classic.winamp.com/ Seems that Winamp 2.91 is available... I'll see what that's like. Looks like even Nullsoft knows they screwed up with 3. EDIT: Winamp 2.91 is godly. Everything Winamp3 has with the speed and power of Winamp2, and even manages to do some things better (for example, video; Fullscreen interface is brilliant, and even has perfect support for WMV's - Something Winamp 3 can't do). HIGHLY recommended.
  4. Excuse me? You've got about the same system as I do, and you're getting the FPS that I get at 800x600 at 1600x1200?! o_O;; Yeesh! And on a 15" monitor, too? Either way, it's not a bug, I don't think, I think it actually is set to run at 800x600 (the sensible thing to do, since it's only an alpha and nobody wants to do scaling or things like that).
  5. What version of DirectX are you using? The base that came with XP, or 9? Give 9 a go if you haven't already, and also try turning off any graphical enhancements you may have turned on in the GeForce control panel in Display Properties. If you've overclocked your card, try clocking it down again.
  6. Sorry, Winamp3 is useless. Anyway, it sounds great, if a little repetitive at the beginning, but I guess that's what you're going for. It gets better later on, and it sounds really good for an ambient track.
  7. Overall, I must say, it looks like a sound design, but I feel that having a power supply that can run out during battle is a little on the dull side. If you were to make power armor, you would likely make it so that it could last for days, or at least more than an hour. What we could do is power the suits with a laser emitted from the Skyranger or similar, which is what NASA is planning to do with spacecraft in the future. Something like solar sails, I think. I don't think it would work well, but the tactical element involved would be great; You need a line of sight with the dropship in order to keep your powered armor powered! Maybe instead of powered armor for that, we could develop another, cheaper type of armor (no power supply required), maybe with certain advantages (FCS or a HUD, maybe? Or is that going to powered?) with the disadvantage of having functionality only in direct line of sight with the dropship, meaning less TU's when you're not within line of sight (or someone tosses a smoke grenade between you and it), more energy usage, and less accuracy.
  8. I dunno, tell that to the lone Squaddie being ambushed by four or five Reapers in close quarters
  9. Escort UFO's sounds like a nice idea, and I'd also like to see fighter wings instead of lone aircraft. Usually, in real life, aircraft are launched in at least pairs, and given this, a lot of tactics can be used for this, such as Drag, Sandwich, The Grinder, and Offensive and Defensive Splits. This way, your pilots can actually have somewhat of an advantage in tactics instead of just flying headlong into a barrage of plasma fire, AND it leaves room for taking down enemy escorts (for example, The Grinder is a technique used by the USAF in such a way that aircraft maneuver to fire salvos of AAMs at a superior enemy force beyond visual range, giving them a certain level of protection against counterattacks). Having escorts for Skyrangers and equivalent would also be nice, if we allow UFO's to intercept X-COM aircraft (think alien air bases on Earth). It adds an extra bit of difficulty to it, as unless an aircraft has 360* radar ala AWACS, or rear-radar ala Su-37, UFO's could attack from behind and effectively blow your unmaneuverable, unarmed Skyranger out of the sky before it could say "Unidentified aircraft at six o'clock".
  10. They both played at 320x240 (320x200?) and they both used the same engine, to my knowledge. X-COM 1 was originally designed to run on 486's, so I wouldn't expect much in terms of graphics from it nor its successor, but considering the time frame, and the platform, it's damned good.
  11. Take a look at the UFO activity graphs, and see where areas have a lot of UFO activity. If there are areas where you haven't been shooting down many UFO's which are reporting activity, get a skyranger in the air around that area and see if it can't snuff it out. It may take a few hours (game time) but it's the best way to find them, as the end-of-the-month X-COM "agents" don't tend to find bases too often.
  12. I found the source of my problems (and I overclocked my card as well) - It was running in PCI-Compatibility mode (the bloody thing was leeching off my system RAM instead of using its own, and using the slowest possible transfer speeds.) I updated my motherboard chipset's INF files from Intel's website, and it's working in full AGP 4x mode, and the speed is astonishing compared to before A steady 40+ in Xenocide now, and 3DMark 2001 runs great (the demo, especially.) So there you have it... Win2k isn't all that bad, but appearantly not as good as WinXP in terms of gaming, which is odd, as they're based on the same kernel. Either way, 2k never slows or crashes, and when you run a webserver like me, that's a good thing.
  13. Well, I'm guessing it's not totally complete yet, and that the proper light mapping hasn't been fully implemented yet, therefore causing the 'shiny' effect you see on the mountains due to bump mapping. And damn you for having twice the FPS I get with an inferior card and a more bloated operating system. XP
