Hey, I just noticed that this game: Dead Frontier Night One uses the UFO2000 music. I just wanted to bring it to someone's attention.

I sort of see where Hobbes is coming from. There is a lot to get used to in the latest version.
-
Glad to see that your still here Kratos For the most part people have been interested. The SWC isnt a very large community but this sort of thing might work.

Expanding the community of players of UFO2000 is always a good thing. Bringing UFO2000 to a community that is already established may achieve this. Now this may seem a little far fetched at first, but let me explain and I will show you how this idea might work. The Community: There is a web-based game called the Star Wars Combine. It is not like the usual web-based games where you gather turns every 10 minutes or so, it is rather a MMORPG that is played via your web-browser. You have a character, they are physically in a universe, you gather items, fly ships, the whole deal. It has a few thousand ACTIVE members (no log ons in 7 days makes you inactive) The community is fairly diverse and open to new things. What does Star Wars have to do with X-COM? very little, but that doesn't matter. UFO2000 is so versatile, with the ability to create custom weapons, maps, you name it (props to those who made this possible). A weapons set for "star wars" related weapons, like a light saber, blaster gun, etc can easily be incorporated into UFO2000. Poof, now UFO2000 is ready for star wars geeks and the like. Bringing UFO2000 to the SWC community: SWC has a system called the Galactic News Service. it is the main output of new, information, updates, etc. All the content is created by the players, mainly Media Factions. I am part of one of these media factions. What I want to do, is bring UFO2000 into the SWC as a sort of "sports league". Players of the SWC can create teams, register those teams with my media faction, and then play on the UFO2000 server. How this works: Once the ufo2k server is stable enough to do this, recording the wins and losses for the league will be easy. Updates on its progress will be featured on the SWC's news service. I think this idea could really work. it would benefit UFO2k greatly and would expand its player base. More information: http://www.swcombine.com/community/news/simnews.php Suggestions are welcome:

This project has been going strong for a long time now. Just seeing that the same names are around today that were around a few years ago shows the devotion to this game. I stop in every 6 months or so just to see what progress has been made. The server being down is no good . I think it should be priority 1 because the game really cant be played w/out a stable server (no duh thanks for pointing that out Joe) But you guys have been doing a great job for a long time now. Just staying on this project for this amount of time is amazing, and i hope you keep up the good work!

I love UFO2k and im glad its going again!!!!!!!!! Just an idea:: Maybe we should organize into teams or groups who will have a specific objective.

Yeah, it is dead there was a lack of interest and I have ADD with these things. you can still check it out here: http://ebfangame.bizhat.com/ufo1.swf old project: http://ebfangame.bizhat.com/home.swf

If i had the skills to do this I would. To be honest, its just an idea that I threw out there hoping that someone would pick it up. I dont know what would go into it, and i dont know how it would work. if its dead its dead, no biggy.

Yeah, exactly what I was thinking. To take a look at the possibilities of what this could be i checked out a few games such as Star Wars Combine http://www.swcombine.com/community/features.php This is a browser based game where you can alter the maps and even travel in real time. Its kind of neat but unfinished. and Utopia http://games.swirve.com/utopia/ This game has a huge player base and is very simple. it seems like its quite fun, although ive only played for a couple of days now.

What about using an FSO or browser based game to accompany UFO2000? I dont have the slightest idea as far as those things work, but maybe someone else does? even having something Apoc style browser game would be very cool

I dont have much knowledge of databases and such. To be honest i dont know what an MySQL data base is . Im very willing to learn if someone is willing to teach me the basics or point me to where i can learn it easily.

Sporb, you seem to know a lot about this, soooooo maybe look into making it happen?? .
-
its possible, but how would you distinguish between players?
-
Yeah CopyBass, something with ranks would be very cool. There is a very easy way of doing this, Ill try to explain how it would work. There are 3 parts that have to happen 1: Clans need to be created with deticated members 2: Clans need to be able to communicate with eachother and their memebrs 3: Clan battles need a way to be recorded. Part one rests on the players. If there are no deticated players this cannot happen. I know we have a small group of people who have been around since i can remember, we occationaly take breaks that can last for weeks or months at a time, but the same people keep coming around time after time. So having deticated players is starting to happen. Part two can be satisfied by the forums. We would need a deticated forum for clan discussion. Part three. This is a very important part, and I think I have a solution. While we cannot have automated battles updated, we do have the lxntINFO, and that is all we need. The hard part is making players understand what THEY need to do so that we can decifer who is participating in a clan battle and who is not. I attempted this with the UFO2KE, requiring players to put an -x-, -a-, or -s- in front of their name. This actually worked pretty good . With appropriate abbreviations, players can convey what clan they belong to, and what rank they are. For example, my attempt at creating a clan --Chaos-- (abrv. "C") would show up like this. If my rank was say, Commander (since thats the highest) I would put a "C" infront, then the "1" -C-1- JoeJoe It would take perhaps three people to each check the LXNT.INFO page to record the battles ONCE A WEEK. The participation is not so high that this cannot be done. Im willing to ressurect the ol' Clans Page ( http://ebfangame.bizhat.com/home.swf ) and add roster pages as well as rules and clan pics. But I cannot do this alone!! If your interested, let me know! I am!
