  1. Well there are many people watching and hoping that the game/project continues. The old UFO were one of the most fun things. And time is always precious because indeed there are exams everywhere (well for me too) Not everyone has the same workload though, so I think a big project will not halt to a grind, it will just move slower. And as long as it is moving, it doesnt matter how slow it is!
  2. "Isn't it a bit silly to compare today's graphics to graphics of old?" Probably, but to be honest, I found the graphics in X-Com: Apocalypse now already very good, and when I look at today's graphics like in WoW i am very disappointed with a LOT i see there. Also Half-life 2 seemed to not be that great, and Doom 3 is perma dark... Ah well, i think they overdo things. Its not beauty by design but by flashing effects... analogy to web, css and flash - like how flash is used instead of CSS sometimes, though there are also GREAT designed flash websites (a japanese guy comes to my mind, of course i forgot the name....)
  3. When you talk about cameras on rifles, you need to think about more advanced strategic command, like system to survey all your units and enemies at a central position, and using unmanned aerial vehicles to get accurate information of the surroundings. Hmm i hope complexity doesnt make the game too difficult to develop
  4. Maybe not all aliens though Imagine how deadly they be if they would think a LOT before doing stuff. I dont believe they would let a base filled with trained enemies survive - they'd rather find out the position, and then infiltrate there when for example most people are out with an avenger flying to another site... and when they return, they be greeted with deadly traps... too smart aliens would be deadly
  5. Also an ancient thread But i gotta say that the sound sometimes was really scary when something did shoot at my soldiers... ( personally i liked apocalypse most because mostly of better graphics, but terror from the deep was scarier)
  6. Why not? Old ideas can be good ideas. And reviving is better than silence
  7. I wouldnt throw the option into void forever though It can be fun for new users, and if you dont want to see them for whatever reasons you have, well options turn off
  8. Actually, in Germany as part of the ESA, there, mini satellites have been improved. I think either last year, or this year (2005), the Sloshsat-Flevo was scheduled into space. Now the cool thing about it is that it IS a satellite, and only weighs at 129 kg. (What would that be in pounds? I guess something along 259 pounds or so) Similar satellites are very cheap because of their small size, they cost less than 10.000 €uro, and I imagine that they will continue to become cheaper. Now, translated for Xenocide, I believe it could be very possible to have mini satellites that arent costing too much, and since they are a rather small object in space, it wouldnt be soooo easy to spot them (well of course they get spotted sooner or later, but maybe there are special coatings, special forms that could delay that inevitable shoot-down by aliens)
  9. "1) there still appears to be so much interest in this type of game yet 2) good strategy games just don't seem to be made anymore" - The original games were big fun. It was a very good game. I enjoyed buying new soldiers, train them to decent stats, and sometimes mourn their loss (i admit it, i cheated sometimes to not lose a main guy i liked hehe, i reloaded an older save file and started from there), while going on with the main game. It was fun to research... it combined many different game genres together. (On an off topic, there was some adventure... space quest or so. dont recall the name, quest for glory in space, space ques.t.. erhm.... where you could play some arcade game in it, in a game hall. I found this funny... i think it was space invaders or so, where you fly a plane in space and shoot at something... i cant recall) The overall game feel really was the most important difference compared to other games (and I actually loved the last release the most... apocalypse or so. The graphics were very decent compared to the 2nd sequel, where you fought under sea...which was great too btw.) Nowadays, Ego Shooters or Pseudo MMORPG with endless hack n slay seem to lead the pack. These kind of games are very boring for me. I am especially mad at the Ego Shooters. I am not really that amazed at the rendering. Many parts seem to be very poorly rendered, just look at some World of Warcraft scenes. Or Doom, which seems to lose it all by having a dark atmosphere - lazy details? Half Life 2 is a bit different probably, but personally, I become more and more tired of that kind of rendering. Why does it always have to follow the same trend ? There is actually only one game the last 4 years or so that i liked to play, which was Blizzard's Warcraft in Multiplayer. Sure, the graphics are comic-like with too much colours, and the game will be the same after you played it 100 times, and outcomes become very predictable.... but its still fun. ( Blizzard's WoW to me was one of the biggest disappointments I have ever seen in the last time. They advertized it a lot, and then, IMHO, it sucked incredibly much. )
